Firmware update for i910 coming soon

I just read this at samsung-omnia.org:

I just saw this posted over at PDAPhoneHome.com by another user and thought I would share it. Sounds like very good news, especially the memory reallocation and the GPS being unlocked.

Samsung to release firmware update in 2-3 weeks for i910

I was on the phone with Samsung tier 3 support today to address a very persistent issue with a possible conflict between Verizon Wireless Sync and the Omnia. The very helpful support engineer told me that Samsung will be releasing the firmware update in 2--3 weeks and it will address a number of issues:

1 - Change the allocation of memory to give more to the device vs My Storage

2 - Unlock the GPS to enable Google Maps, etc.

3 - Address power issues

4 - Adress misc sound and graphic issues

5 - Myriad of other issues

This is very good news.

Awesome news, but still hear-say. The "samsung techs" and "Verizon techs" have been saying a lot of different stuff lately. It seems they will say whatever they can to make you hang up.

Just struck me as odd that they would give details as to what is in the update, rather than just say "Yeah, we're gonna fix it soon".

So that makes me a little hopeful.

Here is why I think its a hoax, either by what it fixes, or by it coming out, at all.

Change the allocation of memory to give more to the device vs My Storage

It doesn't work that way, and no amount of firmware will change that, AFAIK. My Storage is basically a built in SDHC card. It is not the same type of memory as the Device Memory. I am almost certain of it. How can you allocate from My Storage to the Device Memory?

The rest of the stuff just sounds too good to be true.

But, we will see.

Has anyone actually opened the Omnia and verified this? It may already be using one memory chip that's being divided into two parts. If so, then it should be quite easy for them to resize it.

I believe it's highly likely that we could see a driver update in 2-3 weeks. As I mentioned in another post, Samsung is already using a newer firmware for the newly-released Canadian i910's. This leads me to believe that the Verizon i910 will be updated very soon.

According to http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-h...locating-files/ it is a removable chip, it could have been an error on anyone part. All they had to mean was storage memory vs program memory. I'm assuming that a week before it comes out (hopefully) there will be a blog post about it somewhere. I'm still iffy about believing this though.

I think if it were possible, one of the rom cookers here would have already done it, re: the memory.

There's been quite a few custom i900 ROMs already that reallocate My Storage and Program Memory.

Well, Shokka9's latest MinMo 6.5 LITE ROM reallocates 150MB of space to Program Memory, and only uses like 7MB.

Sorry, I'm probably confusing Program and Storage memory for the majority of you. It's Storage memory it reallocates.

You can't reallocate the RAM, although even when running more applications than I need to I rarely use over half of my available RAM, so that's really not an issue for me. It's the lack of Storage memory.

I'm curious how this will be applied... will applying the update result in a hard reset? Will we have to bring it into the VZW shops to get the update? Would it something we can apply ourselves?

Verizon has OTA (over the air) updates, so we could either download it, give it to them at a store, or have the phone do it (from what I understand).

Verizon reserves the right to force-slam firmware to you, which would result in a hard reset. Of course they'd never do this, and never have since I've been with them.

No, your average user usually never even knows there's an update until they have some problem that causes them to bring their phone in, and they do it at store where they have that computer that auto-backs up your data before doing the upgrade.

as will all updates this will require a hard reset.

the allocation of memory is easily possible... btw they don't mean the RAM, then mean storage memory, i honestly don't see much sense in doing that though.

but this does seem very promising (much more than anything heard from VZW so far) as they have to go through Samsung to do an update for anything anyway. Also, the updates are released on the Samsung website, so again this seems promising.... we can only wait and hope, and for those of us trying, keep working on the GPS anyway lol.

Sure, if you'd like to brick your phone!

i910 != i900

Could a firmware update be available via wireless (towers)? Does Verizon normally do this?

That doesn't really make sense, especially since bpivk uses an i900. He meant that there is no such creature.

The update will be downloadable, and will require you to flash your phone. Whether it causes a hard reset or not, we will see.

Sorry, no good new news, but here is the Samsung Canada website withe their i910. With a QPST backup, I hope I can force flash with that if it comes out sooner.

i have been with verizon since i was 14... i am now 25... so i believe i can say i know how verizon works... now i am not doubting there being an update... there will be one sooner or later there always is, even on phones they no longer carry.

but

as for samsung releasing a update that enables GPS i highly doubt..... the only way samsung could do that is if they got permission from verizon since verizon uses gps as a pay to have service... if samsung did that it would be a breach in contract. as i said i believe i know how verizon works and i dont see them all of a sudden changing that feature and losing the money.

the only way i could see verizon doing that is to get more sales of the expensive phones... they would unlock gps on any smartphone type device and all the others that arent such as the razor, voyager, or dare would still have to pay to use it. this in return making it more appealing to buy a phone with a bit more of a price

but i have been wrong befor

According to the i900 repair manual, the main memory is Samsung K5D1258DCA-A090. If you look on page 21 of the pdf linked below, you will see that K5D1258DCA-A090 is a NAND/DRAM IC with 512Mb FLASH and 256Mb DRAM.

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/sem...rage_200708.pdf

So obviously the main memory and the storage memory are two completely different things.

Actually, after reading it again, I fully believe that Samsung could be releasing a firmware update to Verizon within a couple of weeks. However, how long it will take for Verizon to turn it around and release it to us is anybody's guess.

VZW has provided feedback to Samsung about the i910. Samsung has verified that most of the things "wrong" with this phone are simply just working as intended. However, they have responded to VZW as recently as March '09 that an update is being worked on. There is no release date and no information about what will be included. The only official known issues with this phone are the 8gb memory not displaying (fix: soft reset) and the silicone cover was originally sold with no hole for the speaker on the back (fix: replacement done at point of purchase).

There is an update coming. However, after Samsung provides it to VZW, it will be tested. This is to make sure VZW does not provide an update to its customers that bricks all your phones. The only rumors about this software update is that VZW does not know if it will be delayed to also provide WinMo 6.5 or if it will contain said unlocked GPS - something VZW wants on this phone just the same as it is on the Storm (believe me, they want it, they also don't want it to suck).

Lastly, if you call into VZW about the Critically Low Memory issue and you don't know how to fix it, you will most likely be told to hard reset and start over. Then you will be provided with information on how to manage your memory and applications (most of which they pulled from sites like this in their free time to address their own problems with this phone). So please stop calling us, err, them.

P.S. VZAppzone and VVM are the biggest problems with VZW's i910. DO NOT INSTALL. They are getting updates very soon as they are causing major issues. IE VVM opens itself multiple times and runs in the background (can't be seen in any task manager so far as they know) and causes lots of random issues.

IE VZAppzone once installed will incrementally eat up your Storage Memory little by little every day without even being run a second time.
