What firmware should I install??

I'm rly confused - I'm a new Samsung Omnia user, and when I go into settings >> version, it says my firmware version is:

PDA: i900DXHG4/DXHG4

PHONE: i900DXHG4

I've somehow figured out this isn't the latest firmware version out there, but I'm rly confused as to what the next version is that I should install and from where?

ps: Can someone also let me know what the best way is to easily backup all my current files and etc so I can recover them after the upgrade?

Thanks a lot!

I'll make this simple for you.

- To upgrade firmware, you'll need to install the Samsung modem driver to you PC first. You can find this file on Samsung's Omnia website.

- Choosing firmware... this is entirely up to you. You can go official, or you can go custom. Custom, you can get from the ROM section of this forum. Official, you can get from the Omnia website, along with the modem driver, and instructions for upgrading your ROM with XP or Vista - there's a difference so pay attention.

- If you choose to go custom, then read the ROM section of this forum, and follow the threads carefully for whatever ROM you may choose. There's a lot of them out there so choose wisely.

- To backup your phone, the best thing that you can do is use a backup/restore app such as SPB Backup or Sprite Backup. These programs will create an image of everything on your phone, and if you ever need to restore, will restore everything to your phone. I use Sprite Backup and it's really good.

- If you do update your ROM (ROM is another word for firmware), then you will need to backup everything on your phone anyway because all that isn't on My Storage and Storage Card will be lost. You can use Sprite backup for this - it saves a lot of time from having to reload all of your own apps.

Thanks a lot, that does clear up a lot of things. Can you do me one last favor though?

Can you direct me in the location of the latest official Samsung ROM? I've looked everywhere and I can't find it :/

Also, are there any Custom Made ROMS that most people prefer or seem to be the most famous?

Thanks once again for all the help =)

Sure thing!

The latest samsung ROM can be found at Samsung Mobile's site. Just select the omnia as the phone of choice, and there, in the phone spec page, you will find a link that says "Upgrade Your Omnia" (at least on the english site). You will be taken to the upgrade screen where you will have to select your country. The Official ROMs are upgraded by country of origin so if your phone did indeed originate in Denmark (assuming that you're indeed Danish), then you will have to select Denmark. If your purchased your phone from a your local mobile provider, then you may want to check with them first because your phone could be "branded". The best way to know this is whether or not your phone has a provider's logo on it. The reason why I bring this up is because I've seen some posts in this forum about branded phones being locked down by the provider - especially some of the UK and certainly the US phones.

As for the custom ROM, most of them are good. Some notable and reputable names are ROMs from PaSSoA, Shokka, Sector, and Taril. You can find their respective topics in the ROM section of this forum. Just look for their names on the very first page of the section. Read through the posts carefully for installation instructions, details, and reports of any problems by other users. I use Taril's and it is very good.

Hi, I am contemplating flashing my i900 to one of the custom ROMS to free up storage space (I'm running the cab version of M2D and only have approx 10Mb of space left) and get the other benefits such as better battery life etc.

However, from everything I've read thus far, you need an XP machine for this - have I missed something or is this really the case? I only have access to a Vista PC at the moment... :/

From what I do know, it is at least much better to flash with an XP machine. I personally have an XP system as well, but in the meantime, I would at least read the instructions for Vista from Samsung's omnia site. There are threads in the ROM section of the forum that pertain to flashing with Vista and what needs to be done. I suggest looking for those - use the search feature.

Not sure what search terms I used previously, but I couldn't find the thread re flashing and Vista that was staring me in the face a short time after I posted the above. My bad! :excl:
