Guest Apo11on Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 (edited) This Guide is for i910 Verizon CDMA users. i900 GSM Omnia has GPS on different COM port and there are other differences, such as GPS registry settings. Although the process is very similar i900 users will need to use values, other than listed below. ATTENTION!!! GPSGate proxy is NOT required to run TomTom Navigator 7 on i910 Omnia, if you wish to use direct method see post #4 Samsung Omnia Configuration: 1. Enable External GPS icon in Settings by deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>ControlPanel>GPS Settings>redirect key 2. Go to Settings->Personal->Phone and click "Services" tab 3. Select "GPS" and click "Change Setting" 4. Select "Location ON" 5. Click OK to close the window and soft reset the device 6. Go to Settings->System->External GPS 7. Select COM8 for GPS program port 8. Don't change "Hardware tab" - none & 4800 values 9. On "Access" tab make sure "Manage GPS Automatically" is checked 10. Save settings - click OK GPSGate 2.6 installation: 1. Download and install GpsGate 2.6 in your samsung omnia mobile from here: http://franson.com/gpsgate/download.asp?fi...;platform=winxp 2. Go to Programs on your Omnia and start GpsGate 2.6 3. In the Setup Wizard Choose only "Wired or built in GPS", uncheck the other 2 options. 4. Click on Manual 5. On the Input tab select "WM GPS" from dropdown list. It should find GPS on COM8 - click OK on the prompt. Click "Open" button next to it. If it says "Running OK!" - you're on the right track. "Close" it for now. 6. On the Output tab select "Virtual COM Port" from "Add output" dropdown list and click "Add". It should appear on the "Active output" list now. 7. Go to Advanced tab and make sure "Active" is checked. Considering enabling "autostart" as well, depending on your needs. 8. Back to the Input tab - click "Open" 9. Leave GPSGate open and switch to Programs and TT7 TomTom Navigator 7 Configuration: 1. Start TT7 and click "Change preferences" 2. Click the -> arrow 5 times to find "Configure GPS" option and click it 3. Click "Configure" 4. Select "Other NMEA GPS receiver" 5. Leave baud rate at 4800 and click "Done" 6. Ont he next screen select "Franson COM1" - this is the weird name GPSGate gave it's virtual port we created in step 6 7. Click "Done" 8. TT7 should NOT say "No GPS Receiver" after this, message like "Waiting for a valid GPS signal" is OK Check communication" 1. Leave TT7 open and switch back to GPSGate 2. Go to Output tab and select "Virtual COM1" from "Active output" list - it should say "1 client connected" - that would be your TT7. 3. Click "OK" at the right top of the window - you're done! Drive safely. Note: GPSGate isn't really closed after you click "OK" and UI disappears - its running in the background. To really close it go to "Input" tab and "Close" the port. After this your TT7 should say "No GPS Receiver" Edited April 15, 2009 by Apo11on
Guest Kerstubex Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 This works with out upgrading ROM?
Guest Apo11on Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 This works with out upgrading ROM? this establishes communication channel between TomTom software and the GPS chip. What you're asking about is unrelated, you're asking about is the other side of the pipe - whether or not the GPS chip is able to get satellite lock and location. This is the diagram: SATELLITE <---- link1-----> GPS Chip <------link2-------> GPSGate <-------link3------->TomTom Navigator This guide builds link2 and link3 only. Upgrading to leaked ROM or the cooked descendants of it should help establish link 1. Funny thing is, after I posted these instructions I've been doing further experimenting and found out that using GPSGate is not required. You can successfully configure TomTom to communicate directly with the GPS Chip by selecting "Other NMEA GPS receiver" and COM Port 8 in "Configure GPS -> Configure" screen. See my next post for updated instructions, which make this really simple.
Guest Apo11on Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 This is alternative, direct method without using GPSGate proxy. Both methods work. Samsung Omnia Configuration: 1. Enable External GPS icon in Settings by deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>ControlPanel>GPS Settings>redirect key & soft reset 2. Go to Settings->System->External GPS 3. Select COM8 for GPS program port 4. Don't change "Hardware tab" - none & 4800 values 5. On "Access" tab make sure "Manage GPS Automatically" is checked 6. Use Google Maps software or Modaco Cameraware or any other software of your choice to set the baud rate for COM8 port to 57600. You can use this software to actually select COM Port 8, in which case steps 1-5 are redundant. 7. Go to Settings->Personal->Phone and click "Services" tab 8. Select "GPS" and click "Change Setting" 9. Select "Location ON" 10 Click OK to close the window and soft reset the device TomTom Navigator 7 Configuration: 1. Start TT7 and click "Change preferences" 2. Click the -> arrow 5 times to find "Configure GPS" option and click it 3. Click "Configure" 4. Select "Other NMEA GPS receiver" 5. Change baud rate to 57600 to match Windows settings for the chip and click "Done" 6. On the next screen select "COM8:" 7. Click "Done"

In both cases the phone says poor reception and shows no satellites. I tested the procedure as above and it seems to work, but that is the only message I get. Would be great if you coud give me suggestions how to fix this. Thanks! Bob
