Guest Natsirt Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 hey guys, this might be a stupid question to ask but, does anyone know how to configure GPRS settings properly for Optus (aussie network).. because i've tried and tried and called them up and everything and they sent me the settings and i configured them, but my GPRS still doesnt work. Could it be the ROM version im using? (taril's DXHL3 FINAL ROM) or does it just need a hard reset? I dont want to hard reset because i dont really wanna re-install all my programs and configure the settings and stuff (unless theres a backup program that can re-install and re-configure everything for me :excl:).. or could it be possible that its because of my phone being bought overseas (off ebay).. ?? im totally out of ideas and it's frustrating not having GPRS working because my plan is going to waste and i cant send picture messages to people.. ;) If anyone from Australia could perhaps run me through how they set up their GPRS/Wap/MMS that'll be really good :excl: Oh my service provider is TPG/Soul, but they sent me settings pretty much the same as optus, if that info is of any help at all :excl: Thanks in advance all... :excl:
Guest meabigbaldguy Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 Maybe I can help with the following advice. I beg your pardon if you have already done this, but perhaps it'll work for you. I had a similar situation after updating to Taril's latest DXIA5 ROM. Immediately after the update, none of my data apps would connect with GPRS, but the solution was quite simple for me. Go to Settings/Connections/Connections/Manage Existing Connections. Do you see the name of your WAP provider? - If yes, then tap and hold on over the name until the sub window appears, and connect. Does it indeed connect? If so, then all of your data apps should now autoconnect. This particular step solved my problem. - If the profile isn't present, then from the same screen in the Connections Manager, you can click on new and try re-entering the profile information from your provider. Once all is entered, perform the connect step written above. I haven't seen Taril's DHL3 Final, but I'm not aware of any problems from his other users. I wouldn't imagine that there is because his work was/is very good, and he/she traditionally never changes the factory settings other than adding some optimizations and other optimized applications. Do you have Taril's Advanced Configuration Tool in your programs folder? I do in mine - it was built into my version of the ROM. Anyway, if you do, then you can look into the DATA CONNECTIONS header and verify the following... (assuming the settings are the same in your ROM version - DXIA5 is the most recent of Tari's ROMs) GPRS AUTO ATTACH: ENABLED. The additional settings by default are... GPRS DISCONNECT: Enable Button and Timer EDGE ICON: Enabled LEGACY GPRS NOTIFICATION: Enabled PRIVATE INTERFACE FOR INTERNET SHARING: Custom In the Adv Config Tool, click on Menu/More Settings/Connections. Do you see you WAP provider in this list? If so, then make sure that it is enabled. To change this setting, simply tap and hold over the name until the window appears, then select ENABLED. Soft reset if you have to change any settings at all. Commenting on your statement about a backup program... Such a program does indeed exist. There are two that I know of - Sprite Backup and SPB Backup. I use Sprite Backup and it is very good. It creates an image of all registry and phone settings, files, apps, and programs on your device - EVERYTHING! Should you ever need to restore, you can flash the image from your PC using Active Sync, or you can load it directly onto the phone and flash from there. This comes in handy when flashing a new ROM because it saves a hell of a lot of time. Backup process can take about 2-5 minutes depending on your data capacity, and restoration time is about the same. The only problem that I ever had with the restore was just having to reinstall my GPS program, and reload the map license keys, which is a fine trade off in my opinion. Happy hunting, mate!
Guest Natsirt Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 thanks so much meabigbaldguy! your answer was very comprehensive and the methods you mentioned didn't occur to me yet. I'm about to try now, just soft resetted my phone (after the advance config tool). i'll let u know how it goes.. oh, about the backup, i use spb backup, is that around the same or is Sprite backup better? because from what you've mentioned, sprite backup suits my needs more (because i have changed the registry, remapped keys, installed programs etc etc)
Guest Natsirt Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 thanks for the help meabigbaldguy, but my problem still remains, even after doing everything you mentioned. :/ It doesnt matter what name I entered for the connections and network does it? because i had previous made cconnections but with wrong settings, so I made new networks/connections with the right settings, but just have 0 and 1 in the names.. shouldn't matter right? hmmmm
Guest 95SKY Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 I have a omnia with optus, Have you tried to start the phone up with and different sim whether its telstra or whoever? then start the phone up with the optus sim card? Mine flags up with someting like ""do you want to auto detect optus settings etc etc.."" maybe a soloution as i changed sims today and it prompted me every time.
Guest 95SKY Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 Also i have the latest singapore rom update DXIA5.

Mine flags up with someting like ""do you want to auto detect optus settings etc etc.."" maybe a soloution as i changed sims today and it prompted me every time. yeah, i had that before when i flashed my rom, and i did make the phone auto detect optus settings etc etc... however it still didn't work, so I had to resort to manual configuration. And when that didn't work, i went to optus shops and contacted my service provider and they told me to go do it on the optus website.. so i'm back to square one :excl: Thanks for the help though 95SKY :excl: much appreciated.
Guest naynada Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 That's quite odd. I'm with TPG/Soul as well...like 95SKY, I just popped in the SIM and it detected the Optus AU settings itself! I used to run taril's DXHL3 FINAL - no problems there. (Now running taril's DXIA5) So the ROM shouldn't be an issue...

I used to run taril's DXHL3 FINAL - no problems there. (Now running taril's DXIA5) So the ROM shouldn't be an issue... hmm so naynada, u and 95SKY have both just popped in the SIM and it detected the optus AU settings by itself, and from there it just worked? As 95SKY mentioned, he popped in a different network sim (telstra for example) and then popped in his optus sim back in again, and it came up with the settings.. will this work with another optus sim card? because my whole family uses optus and I dont really have access to another network's sim card. :/ hmm.. But I had the detect auto settings b4 when i first flashed to tarils DXHL3 final, and i let it configure itself, but the internet wouldnt work back then. the error message i keep receiving is: dialed failed: wap.optus.net.au or sumthing like that.. and it tells me to check my settings and if the problem persists, that i should reset my device. Would it be possible if you guys can perhaps send me your settings through PM or sumthing? Would multiple networks (the connection networks under the connection settings, not the network like optus :excl:) with the same (or roughly the same) settings conflict and contribute to the problem?? Because before when I tried to manually configure the settings, I followed the Optus website and it told me to create a NEW network everytime and so I did and renamed them all like Optus WEB1/Optus WEB2 etc etc... and I don't know how to delete them. Thanks again to every1 for their contribution! :excl:

Dunno. Couldn't hurt to give it a whirl. the error message i keep receiving is: dialed failed: wap.optus.net.au or sumthing like that.. and it tells me to check my settings and if the problem persists, that i should reset my device. I'm not sure what settings are applicable (cos it like, configured itself =P) ...but if you direct me to what settings you'd like I may be able to help... Have you tried getting Optus Zoo to send you the details? I remember there was some discussion on Whirlpool about TPG/Soul WAP there...but never had any such issues myself. Um. I don't know why it's WEB1 etc... cos under my "GPRS Authentication" settings page, apparently I have four GPRS Connections: Optus Zoo Optus MMS Optus Internet Optus Streaming And they all use "PAP" authentication (whatever that is) I believe whenever my Omnia connects to the net it uses "Optus Internet". Just as an afterthought, would you have any programs installed that may be interfering with your connection? Like "NoData"? hahaha. I've made that mistake before that's all heh

I went settings-connections-advanced-select networks-programs that connect to internet (top drop down box)-selected My Internet (was My ISP for some weird reason.meh)-edit and then checking out the details revealed: General Tab Name: My Internet Modem Tab There was a connection called "optus internet" with a number "internet" Name: Optus Internet Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS) Access point name: internet Username: P/W: Domain: [that is, they're all blank] in advanced, use server assigned IP Proxy Settings tab Only "This network connects to the Internet" is ticked. Guest meabigbaldguy Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 To delete old network settings, go back to the GPRS connections manager that I mentioned in my earlier post. When you tap and hold over the name, the window will give you the option to delete or connect. You may want to delete all and then start from scratch because perhaps there is some sort of conflict, it's your call... especially if you have at least MMS working now. However, you can also look into the following... Settings/Connections/GPRS Authentication - Make sure that you can see your provider's WAP name here and the the authentication is PAP. If not PAP, then click edit and change it there. Settings/Connections/HSDPA - Enable Settings/Connections/Operator Settings - Can you see your mobile provider's name in the box? If not, then click on the dropdown. Do you see it in the list? Another item that occurred to me is that it's entirely possible that the issue may be related to your SIM access and not the phone settings themselves. Some phone carriers - especially American carriers - love to encrypt and lock down their SIM cards so that they are only compatible with their own branded equipment. For example, my German Tmobile SIM has unrestricted access to the my Omnia, and when I insert it into the phone, it's instantly recognized. On the other hand, when I insert my American Tmobile SIM card into my Omnia, it only recognizes the line, which means that I have access to the phone, but nothing else. It doesn't even recognize the provider name. Not sure how it is with Aussie carriers, but I wish you the best!

If that really is the case, boy would i look like a fool :excl: it hadn't occured to me until now because I didn't realise the fact that recently when i switched to TPG i swapped sim cards with my sister, and she never used internet on her phone, so it probably wasn't even activated or configured for GPRS/WAP/MMS.. so.. if i activate it, it should work.. in theory :excl: hope it works! lol A BIG BIG BIG BIG thanks to everyone who contributed their ideas :excl:
Guest 95SKY Posted April 17, 2009 Report Posted April 17, 2009 This mite sound dumb but have you checked your band settings? in Settings>Personal>Phone>More is it set to auto? Just a thought.

Guest Natsirt Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 YES IT's FINALLY WORKING!!!! lol.. apparently all my settings were correct and the problem was with TPG.. they hadn't activated my number or something with their service. I called them up and then they resetted my service and now it's all good. thank you everyone who helped me out!!! =) =)
