Guest gahbriel Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 Hi ppl, I cant use my GPS, neither with iGO8 or with GoogleMaps. In iGO8, in the satellites screen, theres a green bar blinking while all of the bars above it (which I believe are used for the satellites signals) are empty. Any idea on hwo to solve it? Regards, Gabriel
Guest gahbriel Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 (edited) Ive also some newbie doubts: 1. How much time does it take to get it on? 2. Do i need to be on street or leaving the device near the window is sufficient? From what I know GPS uses ground to in signal receiving, but itd be good to be able to test it from home. Ive already read all material about GPS in the Forum and tried also BAF GPS Toggle v1.9 without success. Thx in advance, Gabriel Edited April 16, 2009 by gahbriel
Guest meabigbaldguy Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 (edited) So long as your Omnia GPS settings are set up properly, then you should be fine. Go to Settings/System/External GPS and verify that the program access is set to COM 3, Hardware Access is COM 9, and make sure that the box that says "MANAGE CONNECTIONS AUTOMATICALLY" is checked. If one or all were not correct, then you will have to go to your Navi program and setup the GPS again in the options. I recommend setting this up automatically if your program allows for this. Make sure that the phone's time and date are also set correctly - this is especially important. I use my GPS quite a bit on my Omnia, and I personally believe that at least mine works very well as a Navi. I'm not using any other GPS enhancing apps other than the tweak mentioned in the link below. I've read some horror stories in this forum about some of the third party GPS enhancing apps out there. If you haven't already, then I recommend that you do perform the registry tweak mentioned in the link below - don't worry it's safe, and it's common knowledge with the Omnia. http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-h...ut-xtra-enabled The GPS reciever is located on the bottom of the phone. It works best when you lock onto a signal outdoors. If you've never locked on before, then it make take a few minutes longer to find a signal depending on the size of your GPS map data region. My device typically tends to do a search based on my last known location, so If I'm locking on from one country to the next, then it takes a few more moments to pinpoint. You mentioned that you see a green blinking bar, so this probably means that the reciever is active, it's just searching. Don't worry, I had the same nervousness when I began using the device for the first time. Trust me, it will do what it's designed to do! Edited April 16, 2009 by meabigbaldguy

Guest meabigbaldguy Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 Thx for the help, meabigbaldguy. Id a lot of problems with my i900l and its easy for me to believe the GPS is broken =/ Ill try tomorrow with this tweak in my way to uni and in the campus, a very wide and open area. Ill give feedback tomorrow asap. Thx again. How long should I wait before giving up? I read of ppl who had to wait until 20 minutes... Gabriel I've personally never had to wait more than 5 or so minutes - and this was only when I was trying to use the device in a completely different location than the last. For example, If I use my device in the UK, and then the next time, I use it in Italy, it will base it's satellite search from the last known position - the UK. It will then take a few extra minutes for it to route to the nearest satellite closest to my actual position. Otherwise, if you use the device within the same proximity most of the time - meaning within the same country, you should have a lock within a minute. At least that's how it works for me. Try the tweak - it will help with the signal search because it won't be also looking for a response from the internet. You should be fine! By the way, I'm using Copilot Live 7 - it's good! By the way, Google Maps uses the internet to aide the GPS reciever.
Guest davey1980 Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 from wot i found out the hardware for omnia gps is different... connects fast if moving eg car.. can take upto 15mins and drop off if walking slow or static.
Guest Yunabeco Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 I had to wait like 30 minutes for satellites to pop up on iGo after I disabled XTRA.

That's an excellent point, and one I definitely forgot to mention. Walking and/or idly waiting for a signal will take longer than if you are actually moving in your car. Your Navi program's settings or options menu should have a function that will allow you to change your mode of transportation - car, walking, bicycle. At least mine does. Otherwise, the default setting is usually automobile. Put in layman's terms... If you're walking, and the program is set to automobile, speed and timing expectations will not be met, and therefore exact positioning calculations will take longer to figure out. I believe the usual expectation for an automobile is about >5 mph or >9 kph. This is also why the time and date of your device needs to be set correctly. One would think that it should much simpler than this... but it's not.
Guest Quang05BlkBoxsterS n Omnia Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 I don't know how you set up GPS but it only takes less than 15 secs, YES, for mine Omnia to lock from a reset or not using GPS for several days at a new location several miles (don't know enhanced GPS help but is enabled via EDGE). That is a lock from a cold start :excl: and it works EVERYTIME.
Guest gahbriel Posted April 17, 2009 Report Posted April 17, 2009 Thank you, people. After waiting ~20min all our efforts were rewarded by its perfect functioning :excl:

Guest wessels Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 Where on Omnia did you see "Settings/System/External GPS"? I cannot get it on mine. What am I doing wrong? Yesterday i found out that when you turn off your telephone function the GPS is not working. Turning on the telphone function will also turn on the GPS again. Try this may be this is your solution.
