My WIFI has gone wrong.... Help

As the subject says... I installed Mplayer the other day and went to try it out on wifi as my 3g signal isn't that great at work, and WIFI just said unavailable.

Thinking it might have just been the access point at work, I forgot about it till later in the day and tried it at home. Still unavailable.

Started getting worried then and asked in the WM 6.1 Rom by Shokka9 thread which is the rom I current have installed. Got a few pointers to hard reset which I wasn't keen on doing to be honest as I had just got it setup just right.

Anyway, decided on friday to hard reset. Once it had reset itself, I went straight to WIFI to see if I could connect at home. Still Unavailable. I promptly hard reset again, same result. I then reflashed the rom. Same result, Unavailable.

I continued to reinstall the whole phone again for general use. At a couple of friends today, tried again to connect to their WIFI networks, still unavailable.

So, is the WIFI system on my phone shafted, or could it be the rom at fault. I suppose if I feel like it I can try a different rom.

Prior to hard resetting Shokka9 20954 last week after a storage memory error (couldn't install or uninstall any applications), WIFI was working.

Before that rom, I had tried out Shokka9's beta WM6.5 rom, and WIFI was working.

I don't use WIFI a lot of the time, but you know one day I will need it and it won't be working.

not working how, no wifi networks listed? did you try in a place where there is one for sure?

Its not working as in it can't find any networks. It simply lists everything as "UNAVAILABLE".

I've tried in four different places where I know there is a WLAN working with no problems. In fact, I'm writing this post on my Dell Notebook connected via WIFI to my home WLAN.

I've tried adding networks manually, and it still lists them as UNAVAILABLE.

could u post a screenshot if u got to start-settings-connections-wifi. and when the wifi is on, in a place that u know for sure there is a wifi router. just to make sure, be in close range to the router.

i had some issue like that with an official ROM from samsung, and i wrote to them a really long email abt their bugs in the DXHK3 ROM, and obviously they never answered. :excl: :excl:

its not always a defect in the ROM or the omnia, sometimes it due to the fact that the router is using another frequency.

if u can post a screenshot then maybe someone can help, if they get the source of the problem.

Couldn't be a ROM problem, . cos I've had it before but not yet on Shokka's 6.1 rom

You have't done some tweaking some numbers, .. making him chnl 1 or static IP

I've installed three seperate roms now. I reinstalled Shokka9's WM6.1 again, no change.

I then installed the beta WM6.5 rom which also didn't make any difference, but figuring that he doesn't put the phone part in the flash file anymore, I also went back to Samsungs latest original rom which included the latest phone part, and that didn't work either, before putting WM6.5 beta back on after that.

So I've come to the conclusion that its the hardware at fault now. Thing is I haven't dropped the phone, or made any changes to hardware settings to cause this.

You mean like this?

I haven't changed anything, only turned WIFI on. As you can see its working, but just doesn't detect anything, and says "UNAVAILABLE". My home wifi router is sitting about 3 metres away, which my Dell Notebook is currently connected to and my old Nokia N95 sees straight away.

i actually dont think that it is a hardware problem,, because when i run wifi in places that have no coverage at all, it gives the same screen as u have.

it could be that when last time u used the wifi, it caused the chip to tune into a particular frequency and now the frequency actually changed. what u can do is that just go to the wifi router settings on the pc and change the frequency channel to either 3, 11 or 13.

channels 11 or 13 are know to work best with the omnia. then on the omnia, just on the second screen, click to "add new" then enter the details for the router and see if it gives any other messages and if u can post the screens as well, since that actually helps.

if this has the same problem, then just to make sure that it is not from the hardware or if it actually is, try installing some other wifi apps,, like wifirouter ( u can make a crash recovery option in this app!! worth a try )or wifisniffer ( could help u see some extra info abt the wifi ).

Okay, thanks, I'll see if that makes a difference.

Well tried as you suggested... No different.

The hardware appears to be working as it is scanning for a wireless network, but seems to fail to connect.

Tried the two more likely frequencies, but it didn't pick up my router on either one.

It just reported that there were no visible networks.

Anywhere new we can try?

try installing a 3rd party app that causes the wifi hardware to wake up, i mean like wifi sniffer or wifirouter,,, i dont rememeber the names of the apps exactly but just google some apps for ppc that are work alones... meaning that u dont need to switch wifi on, on winmo for them to work, they should use the hardware by their own and switch it on or off bythemselves, then u can isolate for sure if it is either a hardware or software problem.

i am no expert but i had problems with my wifi as well and i proceeded by eliminating reasons rather than jumping to conclusions like it is hardware issue, and got to fix it.

i am suspecting that the hardware might be still intact, just that the tuning frequency is just crewed up, no some reason. i dont think it is that easy to break the wifi chip in the omnia.

well try some 3rd party apps and let me know what u found out, i will try to help u out solving this issue.

Right I installed a couple of apps that accessed the wifi hardware, but they both didn't manage to find a network to connect to.

I have noticed that the wifi is very slow to startup, taking a lot longer than it used to to start looking for any available wlan.

I'm suprised there isn't a diagnostic feature on the omnia to test the wifi chip, as you can test the gps, sound, screen etc.
