Guest Damiuswolf Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Hey guys, sorry for coming out of the blue with this post without introducing myself first. I was up until 5 am last night trying every little setting I found on the forums and others trying to get this to work, all for it to culminate with the whole "Weak Signal" or "Can't Communicate with GPS Receiver" Quick Intro: Hello, my name is Steve. I've had my Omnia since around November and haven't really done much to it besides putting a few games and changing ringtones, wallpapers and such (trust me, compared to my old phone, that stuff is exciting! :excl: ). I'm not really comfortable yet installing ROMs, but I have been snooping around the registry. I'm pretty technologically inclined, mostly in the hardware area, not too much in the software part (which kinda explains my situation and apprehention to flash the ROM). I have been following a lot of discussions on here, but I don't really like to participate, I don't even really like doing it in the online classes at school. I know there are TONS of people MUCH smarter than I'd ever be on these forums, so I'm hoping to glean some knowledge and learn something about this little device, and maybe in return help someone else some day. Now on to my problem. I bought a BT-368i BT GPS Receiver from USGlobalSat Inc. At the time the GPS on the Omnia wasn't cracked yet and I wanted something that would also connect to my laptop too on longer trips. I've had Google Maps for a while to just kind of look up where I'm at and where I'm going in case I got lost, but I only really used the Get Directions option and never had the opportunity to use a GPS receiver with it. I've managed to get the External GPS icon to come up (with the help of the good people here) and I've used GPSGate. GPSGate finds the receiver, connects, and says everything is green across the boards. I go into Google maps, it says it's "Seeking GPS Satellites", has a bunch of numbers (seemingly random), but NEVER connects to any of them. No matter where I am: outside, inside, cloudy, sunny, it always says "Weak GPS Signal". I downloaded SiRFDemo and saw that the unit is tracking satellites, but that information obviously isn't being translated to the phone or the software. In the "External GPS" settings, I can change the port in the Programs, but the Hardware settings never stick. The instructions for the GPS unit mentioned it uses 38400 for the Baud, but when I use SiRFDemo on my laptop it says it's communicating on Port 8 at 1200. If that's the case, not only does Google Maps not have a baud rate that low, the hardware GPS settings don't even have a 1200 setting, if they would even stick. I've tried many things, including this (very first post), this (5th post), downloaded Windows Live, and probably 25,000 other "possible" solutions. There have been a few promising answers, but nothing has worked for me. So please, I'm begging you guys, help me out. I'm pretty sure it's just the communication between the receiver and the phone, and I think it probably maybe has something to do with the Hardware settings not saving. Thank you guys for all that you do with this phone, it's sure as hell better than all of the other locked down pieces of crap I've had in my life! And thanks for the help! Steve P.S. Sorry the post went a little long!
Guest kurcha Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Hey guys, sorry for coming out of the blue with this post without introducing myself first. I was up until 5 am last night trying every little setting I found on the forums and others trying to get this to work, all for it to culminate with the whole "Weak Signal" or "Can't Communicate with GPS Receiver"... Ok - this is my first post too. NOT - second! 1st was to thank for the help in unlocking the gps. I am not the most technological person out there and had a similar GPS Concern... I used a Pharos BT unit and worked perfectly. This past weekend I came to this site and read on unlocking the GPS... let me tell you that it is a simple procedure and the instructions a pretty straight forward. Now the internal GPS works perfectly, it just takes a little to lock (no more than 90 seconds)... I have been happy to use it that I even turn it on to go to work... like if I going to get lost after traveling that same route for the last 6 years... either way, I want to get familiar with it. Give it a try... install the new ROM. Just be careful since you may brick the phone... Please follow the instructions carefully. Good luck.
Guest Damiuswolf Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 I'm not really looking to unlock the GPS in the phone since I spent money on the external receiver, and wouldn't an external receiver have a better signal acquisition anyway? That's probably just my thinking. Besides, I don't want to run the risk of bricking my phone if I don't absolutely have to. Thanks for the reply though! If I don't get the BT receiver going I'll just have to bite the bullet and install a new ROM. It just kind of sucks because everyone has their personal modifications to it that I don't know which one will give me the best bang for my buck. I'll just have to read through them, close my eyes, and throw a dart at my screen. Whichever one I can't read behind the leaking liquid crystal I'll install :excl: Steve
Guest Damiuswolf Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Ok somehow while I was sitting at work and messing around with the settings some more I just happened to get it to work. I have no idea why this didn't work before, but I was about to pull my hair out, or just rip my clothes off and go running like a madman through the streets laughing insanely. Anyway, my settings are: In External GPS: GPS Program port is COM6 GPS Hardware port in (None) Baud is 4800 Manage GPS Automatically is checked The part that I really didn't see anywhere (probably because it's common knowledge) is that in the Bluetooth settings I had to create a new outgoing port on the COM Ports tab at the bottom. I made it COM6. After I did all of that, I just selected COM6 in Google Maps and left the Baud at 4800. I hope this helps someone out out there. If anyone can, let me know if any of those settings are redundant or if it's just common knowledge or what.
