Guest RobMac92 Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-h...panel-on-omnia/ The above is the forum post on replacing the touchscreen on your Omnia. I got my Omnia from Vodaphone in Sept/Oct 08. The screen was OK, but worked best with a stylus. Having read the above post and looking on ebay I decided that for £15 why not give it a try. I got mine from this seller: http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Electronix802__W0QQ_armrsZ1 The screen arrived in four days. I forgot to print the instructions from the forum post and didnt have a computer on so just went for it with a mini screw driver. Took the screws out and unstuck the old touchscreen (thought I was going to break it, but didn't!). Slotted new screen in and prompty spent 20 minutes fiddling around with the little orange cable. Put it all back together and it worked! (I have no faith in my own skills...). First thing I noticed was the new screen was a poor finish and has left a 1mm gap between the bottom keys and the screen, which I have covered with a screen protector. The main thing though is that the screen is a million times more sensitive and usuable! Considering how easy it is to do, it is worth doing. I have done this topic just to draw peoples attention to how easy it is and how much better it makes your omnia. While I am at it I would just like to say a big thanks to all you software geeks that make my omnia so much fun to own and all the updates and roms you make. Keep it up :D

Guest tammam Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Why from Vodafone Sep/Oct? Is there a particular problem with models sold during that period? I got mine in September!! I have to admit, I don't have a problem with touch sensitivity on my Omnia so one might argue that there is no need to be concerned, however, it doesn't hurt to know. I think I'll compare my Vodafone Omnia with my friend's Orange Omnia and see :-) cheers, Tammam
Guest Rob V Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Don't forget that touch sensitivity can also be changed via Registry entries (HKLM\Hardware\Devicemap\Touch, using the 'UpDown' and 'Click' values). Search the forums for more info, but this may be a way to get touch sensitivity where you like it without replacing the screen...

Guest RobMac92 Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Just for peoples info. My voda was purchased in sept/oct 08 so thats why I believe there is a problem with that batch. The sensitivity settings did very little for my old touchscreen if anything. I am using Sectors WM6.5 (which is great btw!) and when I used my old screen you could not really using your fingers accurately, it was nails that did the job. I did not change my rom and yet with the new screen I dont need to set any settings to increase sensitivity. To give a rough idea of how much more sensitive it is, it is almost as good as my mates iphone now to use with my fingers. Also I have not dropped or damaged it at all. When I first got my Omnia, I got sent 2 by mistake by voda (unfortunately had to send one back) and they both were as sensitive on the screen as each other. As to the carphonewarehouse repair I had no idea they would do it even though im not their customer, though I doubt they would do it in half an hour and have my phone back to me and working in that time (please correct me if I am wrong). Just trying to help people get the most out what is a great phone.
Guest jonboyuk Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Hang on - let me shed a little light on this. It's not just for Voda, it's for any first batch Omnia's. They only work properly with stylus/fingernails - as opposed to the latest batch which work with your fingers. Yes you can increase the sensitivity but if you have an old Omnia, it won't magically allow you to use your finger! Wholesaleandy on Ebay sells them, I bought one and it fits perfectly (no gaps) and it works AMAZINGLY!!! It's nearly as good as the iPhone now. I highly recommend it to anyone with an orignal Omnia! There is an extensive post in this forum somewhere regarding this exact subject.

The process is not 'simple' but there is a guide in the thread linked below and if you take your time and are careful, it's perfectly straight forward. I did it and I've never opened a phone up before. http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-h...panel-on-omnia/ Can anyone recommend a good screen protector? Edited April 28, 2009 by 3shirts
Guest z3ntn3l Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 I have an Omnia from September 2008 (Vodafone Germany) and i have really big issues with my screen. Sensitivity tuned up by registry and its ok but the screen doesnt work correctly at all. The screen doesnt detect the Press-Point exactly from above the Upper-half to the top. It detects the press-point allways ~0,8 - 1,0 cm ABOVE the actual Press-Point. So its very difficult to use. The Lower-half of the Screen is OK. Everytime i flash a new ROM (and i tried many...) i get stuck at Calibration-Screen. The only Way to "calibrate" it, is imagine the wrong Detection in the Upper-half and Press 0,8 - 1.0 cm UNDER the Calibrate-Crosses (of course only in the Upper-half).

This is definately a touch panel problem. You could order one of the ones from eBay and change it yourself but you are probably better off going to your nearest Samsung Service Center. They should change it for you under warranty since it is clearly faulty.
