Guest TooMuch2AM Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Now nobody can accuse me of not being an early adopter, but seldom in my years of gadgetry have I encountered such an ill prepared, badly supported, oversold and downright disappointing product as the SPV. Last night my SPV crashed AGAIN draining the battery to the hilt. And even when the phone doesn't crash I struggle to go more than two days without recharging. So much for a 100 hour standby time eh? I'm well past my 14 day return period, but I am VERY tempted to ring orange and either swap this for a 7650 or wait for the P800. Can anyone persuade me otherwise? M PS - does anyone have any dates for the P800 release on Orange yet?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Hold out for the update imho, its been reported to nearly double some peoples battery life...
Guest idoru Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Personally, my SPV has never crashed and I have had it 4 weeks now. Also, I'm consistently playing with it (no sexual innuendo intended) I believe that the UK software patch will improve the battery life of the SPV and also improve its response time. Overall the OS should be more stable. Its obvious that we early adopters were beta testing the SPV phone all along and not paying to do so :!: Was there any particular application that you were running when it crashed? For example, is it consistently crashing when you do something specific on the SPV - like run MSN or another third party software application? Also, you could change the SPV for another SPV - its within your rights and Orange will do this for you - as it may be a faulty phone. I think its worth the try.
Guest SirGaz Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I've been very impressed with my phone, had it 2 weeks now and I've only had a few small problems with it. But I still love it to bits and there is no way I'd swap for anything else. The UK update should provide more stability so stick with for a few more weeks until that comes out
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Doom and Gnuboy are the only times my phone has ever hung btw...
Guest exodus842 Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 my fones locked once and ive had it since november!
Guest yatpeak Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Look, if you want to return your phone that's fine. There are many other good phones on the market, why not try one of them? It's really your own choice whether or not you swap phones, and not for us to convince you otherwise. Hope you find a good phone for yourself, Wyatt
Guest kingbing Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 My phone locks loads - at least once a day, if not more. From other posts, I was under the impression that this was pretty widespread (although not affecting everybody), and that it would be fixed in the UK update. Any ideas on this?
Guest idoru Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I think TooMuch2AM had a genuine request. Its up to the people who participate in the forum to determine if they want to answer or respond to his request. Maybe he was looking for reassurance that he hasn't wasted his money or something else?
Guest Geniarse Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I'm with yatpeak on this! Feel free to chop your SPV in for a Nokia or Sony/Ericsson... You will be trading in the most advanced, smallest phone in the world!! Read these very forums and you will discover new ground breaking apps being ported/developed every single hour of the day. In addition the apps signing process is slowly filtering down and many developers are releasing apps/games on a daily basis. The average punter is just sucked in by the slick advertising of Vodafone et al. F*&^ing picture messaging! Whooppeee! If I were to list the SPV's features my rant would go on for pages and pages See ya.
Guest RS Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Only Doom has locked my phone, and that was only once. Now it's installed on an SD card it runs (almost) like a dream. Had my phone 6 weeks now, no real issues with the phone itself, just with orange backup refusing to recognise my login when I try to restore (Damned backup system! Grrr (and my main job is a data backup consultant  )). Still like my SPV, could do with some accessories though (Where's that keyboard that was 'in development'?)
Guest yatpeak Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Anyhow, If you don't want to help then don't reply. My advise to you is to hide your age so we can't see it but then again it is obvious by your angst  response that you are just 13. Judge me by my age if you want, but I'm not ashamed to be younger than the rest of you, so I see no point in hiding my age. Wyatt
Guest barncourt Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I'd say stick with it. I've got the DK update installed and if the UK is as good it certainly seems to speed the phone up a lot and fix some of the more annoying bugs. I'd agreed the software should have reached a better stage of maturity before Microsoft released it.
Guest SirGaz Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Since when has age had anything to do with it. yatpeak has placed many very sensible comments on this forum so he knows (roughly) what he's talking about. Anyway, we've already got one thread on the forum about the phone not being femine enough, lets not start another about it being aimed at older people. Chill out everyone ;)
Guest idoru Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Judge me by my age if you want, but I'm not ashamed to be younger than the rest of you, so I see no point in hiding my age. Wyatt Ok. I agree that you shouldn't be ashamed about your age. In fact you contribute quite alot to this forum and I am grateful for that. My reply was a reaction to your comment about TooMuch2AM topic which I feel is unjust. I apologise for my comment it was tactless.
Guest Pidder Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 My advise to you is to hide your age so we can't see it but then again it is obvious by your angst  response that you are just 13. My advice is to hide your posts! (Edited: Sorry - crossed with your apologize)
Guest idoru Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 My advice is to hide your posts! Hey look, I have genuinely apologised and I realise that I have offended YatSpeak and probably some others also. So lets leave it at that ok?
Guest yatpeak Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I suppose my comment was a bit rude, I've edited it slightly now. Wyatt
Guest idoru Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Can I edit my nasty comment also? :?
Guest yatpeak Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Click edit on the top right of your post. Thanks, Wyatt
Guest imp Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 My phone locks quite often... Hmmm... It's rather anoying... I've had it about 11 or 12 weeks or something... I like it, it's not that, but I hate it when it locks up - which is at least once a day... //imp
Guest TooMuch2AM Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Hi all, Thanks for the positive comments, I'm still mulling over wether to keep the phone. Someone earlier mentioned the 'typical user', thing is I'm not what you would describe as 'typical' per se. I've had a LOT of mobiles and PDA's over the years and have developed mobile solutions for both my own and other companies in the past both WAP and PDA based and I am an avid MS advocate. I'm not one to give up easily on a new technology, and I do think the smartphone concept is an excellent one. My gripe is with the execution of the phone. The SPV has quite clearly been rushed to market to suit both Orange's and Microsofts needs. Orange needed a 'killer' phone for the pre-christmas market and Microsoft needed to push their already outragously overdue 'stinger' OS out to the public. Quite simply it's a botch job. A botch job that I'm paying through the nose for. Whoever's to blame; Orange, HTC, MS etc the phone has 'too early' and 'proof of concept' written all over it. All it takes is for the Tanager (or other smartphone) to be a better phone and suddenly you have a whole load of pi**sed of SPV owners to deal with. Frankly, I think Orange are holding their breath over the UK update. If it doesn't significantly improve the performance and stability of the phone there will be a huge backlash. M
Guest Bazz Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Quite simply it's a botch job. A botch job that I'm paying through the nose for. How? The most you would have paid would have been £179 and even at that price it's incredibly cheap compared to: * any other phone at launch * any other PDA/Phone combo (XDA was launched at £399 wasn't it?) * any half decent PDA. * any MP3 player That's just for the phone, but for that price you also get what came in the box (cradle, camera, headphones, case and SD). Granted they aren't the best, but still they're part of the package. Then there's the GPRS deal. OK some people have been charged, but most (all) have been refunded this. There's a lot of things wrong with the phone, but I really don't think price is one of them...
Guest Kal-el Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Bazz makes a valid point. There are many accessories that accompany the phone included in the box. Many other phones are more stable but when u work it out they are more expensive. Orange did delay the release date of the SPV for further testing but everyone who pre ordered it surely new that as a world first there would be problems. If ur phone loses its charge within one day then something is definately wrong unless you are canning the phone. Most people should have orange care with this phone and if u dont i'd advise getting it now. If you do then call 150 and get them to send u a new one - remember to copy anything stored in the phone before swapping it. Ref other phones - check out the link on Paul's comment at the beginning of the site. A sneak look at the new Samsung Smartphone. P800 wont be officially released for another month at least but u can bet your bottom dollar that there'll be problems with that too! For the money, the SPV is the best buy and with support like this forum you can be assured that whatever the problem, there will be a solution.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I've been luckymy phones only lockedcrashed once and that was during rebound. I've had it over two months now and the DK update has given me a new phone ;)  personaly I'd give Orange a call and maybe ask for a replacement. Try that first then go for the "different type of phone" option.
