Guest segaodma Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) I was reading other posts and noticed a (i guess) cool thing! Is this a clock with a working compass? :D I saved the picture from this post... http://www.modaco.com/content-page/287268/...hemes/page/100/ If yes... then... How? Where? Guest Jumba Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Howdy I sent you a PM, but here it is for others... The icon is from the Samsung Mobile Navigator (Garmin XT) - I've simply placed it over the clock. :D
Guest segaodma Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Ewww... that was so disappointing! Well... never mind then, let this post be a some kind of a request for such a thing (if it is a resonable one). I know there is a compass software like these that someone can mix them and make a working clock with compass. I just have a feeling that the widget would be sucking up the battery because it would need GPS on? :D
Guest Jumba Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 A compass would indeed be a cool feature for the Omnia - however, since the Omnia's GPS doesn't work unless you're moving at a certain speed, its utility would be limited. Would be good if someone could get this working though.
Guest lastnikita Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 I know there is a compass software like these Where ??? the Omnia's GPS doesn't work unless you're moving at a certain speed What do you mean, it works fine when you don't move at all ! Only software should be improved.. maybe using GPS & accelerometer ?
Guest necosino Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Right, the GPS works while sitting still. But it can only see your position, not where you are pointed. You need to be moving for it to know your direction.. Make sense?
Guest lastnikita Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) Sure, a few meters would do the job. Then the accelerometer could handle accuracy when just turning, without moving a lot. I've seen a nokia work this way and the GPS maps were turning (rotation) in the meantime to reflect actual view ! Edited May 5, 2009 by lastnikita
Guest Jumba Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Right, the GPS works while sitting still. But it can only see your position, not where you are pointed. You need to be moving for it to know your direction.. Make sense? Yep, that's what I was saying. Of course the GPS shows your position while standing still, but try walking around with it and you'll soon find it's pretty useless. What's more, when you are walking/standing still the GPS won't have any way of telling what direction you're facing.
Guest segaodma Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 I think that the compass can work even without using GPS, just by calculating the distance to the GSM towers nearby. But I still haven't seen software working based on that. I know that GSM operators have it and use it for locating stolen phones. That would be something similar to GPS, but working based on the GSM towers. It would have no need for GPS activating and the compass would work just with short movement. We just need THE man to do it. :D
Guest lastnikita Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 try walking around with it and you'll soon find it's pretty useless I don't.. Maybe you should explain why ? Maybe yours has a problem. What's more, when you are walking/standing still the GPS won't have any way of telling what direction you're facing This is what I told you, the gps NEVER has any way of telling what direction you're facing, that's a software problem, thus software only needs improvement, and using accelerometer should help.
Guest segaodma Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 What kind of software compass are you using?
Guest Jumba Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I don't.. Maybe you should explain why ? Maybe yours has a problem. Calm down k. There's nothing wrong with my Omnia. At walking speed the Omnia's GPS updates rarely and takes ages to get a fix. From what I've read it's been optimised for driving speeds (above 9km/h), and thus is not great for walking/static navigation. It's a feature, not a fault. However, there may be a way of disabling this, I've been looking but haven't found much yet.
