Guest smilegod Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 A great tweak that speeds up your Wi-Fi.. It works by enabling the “g mode” of your device’s WLAN card (disabled by default on most devices). This hack has proven to improve Wi-Fi speeds by 3 times.. Iinstall the attached .CAB to the device, then soft reset. It will change the value of dot11SupportedRateMaskG from the default 4 (1 in some cases) to 8 inside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS. Note: Some devices don't have that structure in the registry. If it's your case, our cab will create it automatically. I do not take credit for the creation of this.. I merely happened to find this at the site linked above and thought to post it here.. pocketnowEnableWLANGMode.cab
Guest zoolie Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 What is the maximum speed you can achive over WLAN with this tweak?

Guest Adrynalyne Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) Bogus tweak, only works for HTC devices and others using that wifi driver. We use jaguargsp1. This will not do anything for an Omnia user. Edited May 11, 2009 by Adrynalyne
Guest Master_Axe Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 well, *is* there a tweak then, at least for range, given that that is very bad?

This same tweak is in SKtools program at SK-Tools/Tune up/Network tab/Wlan 802.11G Support/ Yes/OK/Done/OK It does the same change HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS dot11SupportedRatMaskG value from 4 to 8 SKtools is suppose to be generic, not HTC specific. I think that the tnetwln1 driver is probably the most common wifi driver. Hence it finds its way into tweaking apps.
Guest natzakaria Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 From what I know enabling the G decreases the WiFi range compared to B
Guest Yunabeco Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 802.11g is already enabled. Or at least, my phone works fine on my G-only router (disabled B, unless dd-wrt has been lying to me the whole time).
Guest necosino Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 It doesn't enable G!!! I have confirmed this does actually work. I installed WMWifiRouter and connected my laptop. At first it said that the connection was on wireless-B I installed this cab, restarted my phone, restarted WMWifiRouter, and now my laptop says wireless-G, and speed is improved!
Guest maf107ezk0 Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 Yes, it works - I have been using it for a while and there is a difference :D
Guest Adrynalyne Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 Yes, it works - I have been using it for a while and there is a difference :D Placebos rule. Come on guys, lets think about this. How is passing parameters to a non-existent driver going to help. Seriously.
Guest maf107ezk0 Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 haha, ok if you say so :D I`m telling you there`s effect but since you don`t want to believe me - oK

Depending on signal strength, G can fall to B speeds. That said, without this tweak, I show wireless G connection via wmwifirouter.

How does it work? Some phantom driver on the system? Maybe it works like the touch tweaks for HTC on the Omnia? So many posts of people saying it works on their Omnia, yet it passes settings changes to a touch driver not on their system. :D

Guest Neil5459 Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Regarding the HTC stuff- this modification is redundant in all the recent HTC models, as they have 802.11G already enabled. It originated in the days of the HTC Wizard which was 'B' only, and allowed it to connect to 'G' routers by changing the connection parameters, but it was never designed to increase throughput- just to allow connection to 'G-only' routers. I have tested this extensively on both my HTC devices and the presence, or absence of these reg keys makes absolutely no difference. I can only assume the same should be true for the Omnia.
Guest Emre SUMENGEN Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 (edited) I don't know if the cab adds speed or not, but regarding 802.11B/G mode, my Omnia connects to the G-AP (Cisco 1131) already and I know (checked) that the referred registry is not tweaked (the value was 4). I can also say that the wireless association is 54Mbps, as it's seen clearly on the AP itself. (Btw, I'm using sector's M3 WM6.5 ROM, I don't know if it includes a fix/tweak of any kind about this issue) Edit: Added screenshot of Cisco AP Edited May 12, 2009 by Emre SUMENGEN

Guest kav Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 originally the wlan g is disabled on the omnia, dont know why because it says that it is supporteed by the omnia and its written in the specs. then y in the first place they disable it. secondly u can activate it by using sktools. but i tried this, there is no real increase in the speed, it almost the same or unnoticeable if ever there is an increase in the speed. but for sure the range is improved. before the tweak with sktools, i didnt get coverage through 3 walls from my router, but after the tweak, i get 4 bars in network strength most of the time through 3 walls.

I am not disagreeing with you, but just to note that an earlier post said g was weaker than b. :D Very confusing for someone as I who knows little about b vs g. I wish someone had the equipment to verify if changing reg value from 4 to 8 and back changes b to g and back. Also to verify which gives greater range, b or g. And which gives greater speed. Instead, we are now just relying on contradictory anecdotal stories. Bummer. Ron... Edited May 12, 2009 by ronaldb3
Guest Adrynalyne Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 G is not disabled whatsoever on the Omnia. Just because a tweaking program gives an option, doesn't mean it applies to your phone.
