is it possible to install a rom using windows 7? maybe using the virtual xp machine?
I sure don't know why so many people keep saying that you can't use Win 7 to flash your ROM! I have been running Win 7 x64 for many months, and have used it to flash my Omnia at least a half-dozen times already with no problems whatsoever. It's very simple, and does not require the XP VM.

Here's exactly how I do it:

1- Use the Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) that's built into Win 7 to connect with your phone. You don't need to set up a sync relationship, but just be sure that you can successfully browse the files on your device. This simply ensures that you don't have any physical connectivity problems. Also, be sure that you're connecting the phone via a USB 2.0 port. If everything works, unplug your phone from the PC.

2- If you haven't already done so, install the Samsung Mobile USB Driver which can be found on the "VZAccess Manager Software and User's Guide" CD that came with your phone. This step is essential. I can't remember whether this installer needed to be run with elevated privileges, or whether a reboot of the PC was required after installation - but as I recall, I simply followed whatever directions were given by the installer program.

3- Open WMDC, click on Mobile Device Settings, and then on Connection Settings. (You do not have to be connected to the phone to do this.) UNCHECK the boxes for 'Allow USB connections' and 'Allow automatic device authentication'.

4- Start up the UMDL_OMNIA program on your PC (I'm running the newer v. 2.3; not sure if that makes a difference). From here on, you just follow the widely-circulated instructions: Either select a .bin file using the PDA button (if you're flashing to one of the cooked ROMs that only update PDA/WM components); or an .img file using the "Unified Image File" button (if you're flashing both the phone and PDA using a complete ROM image like the 'leaked' Samsung CC20). After selecting your image, be sure to click "DETECT" in the 'Step 3. Detect the device' box. I've often forgotten this step, and nothing will happen if you do! Every button on the UMDL screen should now be grayed out, and "Ready" - "Waiting for the device" should be shown for all eight devices.

5- Turn your phone completely off by holding down the top power button until the "Verizon Goodbye" screen appears, the tune plays, and both the screen and the power button go dark.

6- Leaving the phone off, connect it to the PC with the USB cable.

7- Turn on the phone using the top power button. The Omnia boot screen should appear, with additional text at the bottom telling you that the ROM is being flashed and cautioning you to not unplug the phone. Don't touch anything, and let the process finish. It should only take a minute or two. You'll see progress bars on both the phone and the UMDL screen. Messages should appear on the UMDL screen confirming that your ROM has been successfully flashed, and your phone will automatically do a soft reset. After that reboot begins, it's safe to disconnect the USB cable. The phone will boot up normally using the new ROM.

Note: When you turn on the phone in step (7), you may see only the 'charging' screen if your phone has anything less than 100% charge (a full charge is highly recommended, however.) If this happens, you can press the power button a second time and the Omnia boot/flash screen should appear.

Win 7 x64 is the only platform I've ever used to flash the phone, and I've never had a problem by following these steps.

Hope this helps!
