i am not sure if u can do that in the omnia, it jumps automatically to the 3G network if available from ur operator.

Funny, I have the same problem since I had to hard reset. I did have 3G disabled permanently before (as I don't need it, ever). Now I keep on searching through forums and settings and can't seem to find a way of doing that... Urghhhh.

in some fone, u can select to either connect to the 3G network of ur operator or just use the ordinary network (GSM). apparently in the omnia u dont have the choice, but unless u dont connect using the 3G capabilities, it wont drain the battery much more than usual.

I may be seriously confused here, but on my omnia you can go to settings - connections and there is an icon (red one) called HSDPA, go in, disable, click ok, restart.... ta da?

Hope this is whaat you were looking for.

Yes Voltor , I can disable the HSDPA , but not 3g , as far as I am aware 3G and HSDPA are 2 different "things"

If you want to disable 3G you need to go to - Settings > Phone then scroll across the tabs at the bottom of the screen and select More. Then select Band Selection followed by Get Settings. Here you can alter the frequency band of your phone. It should be set to automatic by default which uses the 3G signal when available. Change to GSM 900/1800 for European users or GSM 850/1900 for US users.

Now your battery will last a lot longer <_<

Thanks very much Kersey , I changed mine to GSM900/1800 (South Africa) and it works , now I will have to give it a day or 2 to see how it effects the battery life

what difference does this make in battery life? a couple of more hours?

unless u dont use the 3G network for data purposes, even if it is connected it doesnt really drain the battery, i mean not soo much more... disabling the auto connection to the 3G network wouldnt make such a difference.

i mean u guys dont have chargers? or is it that u are trying to save some money on the electricity bill by charging the fone as less as possible?

its a powerful fone with a big screen,, use it as u want and when u get home just plug it in the wall charger for christs sakes!!!!

i am sorry but i really dont get it what is with the saving battery life when its already holding for 4 days with 1 time charge to 100% and extensive use for these 4 days. what is it that u guys are looking for?? charging only once a month?

Disabling the 3g has made a huge difference to my battery life . And no I dont want an extra couple of hours , an extra day would be nice . I was only getting 1 day's battrey life out of my phone with moderate use .

then ur fone has serious issues....

i get actually 4 days of battery life from 100% charge til it goes down to 10% and i use my fone a lot, making almost 2 to 3 hrs talking and a lot of internet browsing with wifi and 3G/HSDPA. taking around 20 pics in these 4 days and i still get the proper battery lifetime.

some older ROMs were reported to have extremely bad battery life.

No wait that doesn't make sense anymore. The way i understood it is that you basically have two networks in SA the GSM one where the fastest connection you can get would be edge and the 3g one. As far as I know HSDPA is just a 3g on steroids... faster but same "band" (my jargon isn't that good). Isn't that why HSDPA is also called 3.5g? Hence if you switch off your phones usage of HSDPA you will have no 3g network available, right? I switched it off once and did loose the 3g signal status but didn't really test it for even an hour, and in SA where our signal changes every 5 minutes it may have just been a coincidence (:

A battery life of 1 day is ridiculous though. Mine lasts at least 4 days with little use... in fact i don't think i've charged my phone for the past 2 weeks, but i do tend to active sync it for around an hour everyday? Thats including watching a few clips, a lot of GPS and maybe a picture or two *shrug*

My omnia shows the 3G icon when detects an available network and some people in the forums use the NoData App to disable Gprs so they don't transfer any data. When my Omnia detects a 3G network, will it try to transfer using 3G/HSDPA? Or it just uses the other network to calls?

I don't want to be charged for something that I don't use, because I don't have any data plans.

Thanks.
