Guest dwallersv Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 The Samsung app SmartReader is no longer working on my phone. Rather, I should say that it didn't work when I tried to use it for the first time, so something I've done to the phone has rendered it non-functional. By "nonfunctional" I mean this: You click on the shortcut, the busy cursor spins for a few seconds, then.... nothing. I checked the shortcut to see what exe it was running, tried starting that directly, same result. Hard reset the phone back to the clean CC20 (leaked Verizon GPS) ROM, SmartReader works fine. Played around with it a bit, scanned a few pages of text, and the OCR worked quite well, so this is an app that is both interesting and useful to me. Before I go through the hours and hours of painstakingly rebuilding my configuration from scratch, testing a long the way to see what breaks SmartReader, I wanted to ping the community here to see if anyone has any ideas as to what might be broken, or troubleshooting tips to try and find out. For example, is there any way to turn on some sort of debug mode so that WM will tell me what's causing it to silently die? Any and all suggestions appreciated!
Guest Tim-H Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Were you running any custom ROM before or was it just the cc20? Most of the custom ROMs have the smart reader removed to save space. The icon could have still been there, just not the program.

It works after a hard reset, so it's something I've done in terms of installed app or registry tweak. It takes me hours to reconstruct my current config, so I want to avoid that if possible. It will be even slower if I have to test SmartReader after each app install, reboot, etc. Hoping to avoid that process. Edited May 30, 2009 by dwallersv
Guest Tim-H Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 Maybe it was an SDK install, or .net framwork, or some program that messes with the camera like geotagging?
Guest SRT40 Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 Just a note on my experience, i have S2U2 installed and when its active Smart Reader does exactly what you said you had happen to you, i.e tries to load but never gets there. Luckily i dont use Smart Reader much so have a shortcut in my IFonz to 'ilock2' to kill S2U2 before i need to use it, then restart after. My 2p

Luckily i dont use Smart Reader much so have a shortcut in my IFonz to 'ilock2' to kill S2U2 before i need to use it, then restart after. My 2p Second time today I am awarding the "you da man!" accolade... that was it! Specifically, ilock2.exe. Gotta kill this off to get Smart Reader to work. Killing off S2U2.exe is not enough. Now the mystery: Why does ilock2 interfere with Smart Reader, but not the Camera (for example)? Both seem to be doing similar things to the OS and hardware...
Guest cOnTaGoUs Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I dont have SU2U installed and im getting the exact same problem with my smart reader, im running CC20 ROM to, nothing custom installed just a couple of programs listed below: google maps, garmin gps, resco explorer, resco cm, skype, memmaid, GCz, Net 3.5, Avanced Cfg, windows live, MS tag reader, MS INT sharing, Any ideas which could be messing with smart reader...
Guest dwallersv Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 (edited) Of those listed, I have these installed, and after killing off ilock2, SR works just fine. So, I'd focus on the other apps you listed, and forget about these to start with: google maps, resco explorer, memmaid, Net 3.5, Avanced Cfg, windows live I don't use SR often (in fact, I hadn't even tried it until I posted this thread, and I got my phone in Dec), but man, when you need it it's an awesome feature to have available on my phone! Basically, I needed to OCR a document, make some changes, and send it back. If SR had been working for me at the time, I could have done all that while playing at the beach. Instead, I had to wait until I got home, and end up delaying a time-critical issue for an extra day. Edited June 2, 2009 by dwallersv
