Guest simon11 Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I have just found this forum and I have used the search facility but I am unable to find the answer to my question. I bought an spv last week and I spent all week on the phone to orange technical and searching the internet for an answer to my problem. As I could not find the solution I had to take the phone back. This broke my heart but I had no option. My problem was that when I put the phone in the cradle to download outlook appointments it would try to connect to the internet on my computer. After I removed the spv from the cradle it would then not connect using the in built in gprs. The only way I could get it to connect was by doing a hard reset and then I lost my outlook information including my appointments. I tried the solution below but it didn't work. Is there a way of stopping it from trying to connect on the computer as I do not need this facility? I disabled pass through on active synch but it made no difference. I could put up with all the other bugs. PROBLEM When setting the Internet Connection (In "Programs", "Settings", "Data Connections") to automatic, the phone - when ON the cradle - will successfully use your PC's Internet Connection (ideal if you have a fast connection), but will fail to connect successfully when OFF the cradle to the GPRS. FIX All of the changes below take place in the Settings > Data Connections control panel. 1) Change the "Internet Connection" spinner to Automatic 2) Menu > Edit Connections 3) Open the Dial-Up Connections (choose edit on the Edit Connections screen) 4) Edit "Orange CSD WAP" and change it so it connects to "WAP Network". Press done twice to get back to the list of connection types. 5) Open the GPRS Connections 6) Edit "Orange WAP" and change it so it connects to "WAP Network". Press done to save the change, then the home key to leave the control panel. Thanks to Neil Emms at Microsoft for the definitive instructions here. You may need to also do this.... 1) On your PC - open ActiveSync. 2) Click Options 3) Click "Rules" and ensure that the Pass-Thru is set to use the Internet Has anybody got a solution to this? I could always go and buy another phone. Thanks Simon.
Guest simon11 Posted February 1, 2003 Report Posted February 1, 2003 Has no one else had this problem? When I removed the phone from the cradle after downloading appointments it would not connect to the internet. I would try to connect and it would stay on dialling and would go no further without a hard reset. Surely someone must have had this?? Simon.
Guest mouse_uk Posted February 3, 2003 Report Posted February 3, 2003 ..Yeah i hear you Simon but the answer is even more simple than you imagin ;). Basically i feel that you've let this whole thing get to you too much to be healthy and to make things worse you've also tried to over complicated things. > I have the same problem with my SPV when the Internet and WAP connections are set to 'Automatic'. This is how i work around it: In the 'Settings' folder go to 'Data connections' and change both 'Internet connection' and 'WAP connection' to >>'Pass through connection'<< ...When you want to use the SPV on the cradle. Then simply change both of the settings back to 'Orange GPRS' when you've taken the SPV off the cradle. See, a small amout of effort would have saved your sanity!

Erm so you Don't want it to use the cradle to connect to the internet? ok well set internet connection in data connections to 'orange GPRS? Or am I missing something fundamental?? Will
Guest HelloDave Posted February 3, 2003 Report Posted February 3, 2003 My problem was that when I put the phone in the cradle to download outlook appointments it would try to connect to the internet on my computer. What exactly was trying to conect to the internet? If you mean your firewall told you ActiveSync was trying to connect to the internet/act as a server this is normal, and you have let it, in order for the process to work. If you change your 'net connection on the SPV to "Orange GPRS" then the SPV itself won't connect to the internet through your computer, but you still have to allow ActiveSync to so that it can syncronize your Outlook data. On the subject of the SPV failing to connect via GPRS, sometimes it just doesn't, but I normally find a soft reset clears the problem. It may be that you don't have GPRS coverage in your area; I assume Orange have enabled it on your account? (It may sound stupid, but they don't do it automatically!)
Guest simon11 Posted February 4, 2003 Report Posted February 4, 2003 Thanks very much for your help. I had tried several things suggested by Orange technical but they are not as user orientated as you lot. I cann't remember all the different settings that they told me to use but they didn't work. I took the phone back because my number was due to be transferred from O2 to Orange and this would be a waste of time if the phone didn't work due to a bug. I am self employed and needed the facility of using the internet and keeping my appointments in the phone. I couldn't do both. When I tried the bug fix I have detailed it didn't work so I decided at the last minute to stop my number transfer and return the phone. I must admit that I miss it and all the enjoyment of fiddling with the thing. I was waiting for the English update before going to try again. But this could be forever by the looks of things. Reading some of your comments I now wonder if some of my trouble was signal strength. I live in a poor reception area for any type of radio signal and my signal strength on the phone was sometimes only one. I may have set my phone to the right settings but then have a weak connection and I would think that the settings haven't worked. I believe that gprs needs a stronger signal strength than calls. Can you tell me if altering the data connections takes imediate effect or do you have to power down. If this isn't a bug and it can be easily rectified then I should get another. Perhaps mine was faulty?? Thanks Simon.
Guest HelloDave Posted February 4, 2003 Report Posted February 4, 2003 Which spinner do you set to Orange grprs? Is it the middle one that is usually on automatic or pass through? It's the first one in the list under Settings...Data Connections, labeled "Internet Connection". If you don't set it to automatic then the phone won't switch off GPRS when you put it in the cradle.
