Guest Junk7399 Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 I've been thinking about this and I don't see why it can't be done. (By someone that can make applications. a.k.a. not me) This thing has a camera and an accelerometer on it. I don't see why we can't use it as our little black box for wrecks in our cars. All we would need is a power cable and a windshield mount that doesn't cover the camera, have it record 1 minute and loop it, then when it detect a hard stop (adjustable sensitivity) it can then start the recording from 30 seconds ago to a minute or 2 after. What are your thoughts? Can it be done? Junkie

However, I don't think our devices would survive a crash to see the video anyways... The Omnia it's just too fragile with it's cheap-o-plastic body construction, LOL... Just kidding, I know the post crash video and data can be retrieved and examined on the computer. That is, if the car does not caught fire... LOL Any volunteers to code this? Cheers! Rayan
Guest bpivk Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 One.... Umm two good questions: Do you crash your car on a daily basis? Do you really think that if you have a crash you'll think of your cellphone as the first thing that should be taken care of.

Don't crash on daily basis, but if do crash, this can be used as evidence... only problem is only points 1 way...... Unless you lucky enough to have i900 instead and have front facing camera as well... that's something to think about if someone decides to code this... is it possible to record from both cameras at once? Cell won't be first thing I take care of, but it will be there when I do think of it.
Guest Skythra Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 (edited) Instead of spending a couple of hundred dollars on a box to do exactly what you want, you want someone else to spend hours coding and testing on a device which will in all practical purposes never actually be used or even passed as evidence in a crash. Lets see practically. 1) you'd need to mount the phone on your dash with visibility of the front and rear windscreen. the phone would have to be mounted to the point that during the accident it still maintains a picture of whats happening so that is some serious mounting 2) you'd need to have an accident 3) The evidence from the phone would be needed. So on a really crappy bumper to bumper accident you still wont need the evidence because its going to be covered by some insurance. In which case its usually a automated procedure. If someone hits you from behind its usually their fault. If you rear end someone its generally yours. This is 90% of accidents. A witness will take care of 50-80% of the remaining 10%. You're looking at an accident (maybe a once every two year event) and then maybe a once in a lifetime you might actually use the phone as evidence. Except you probably wont keep this phone for your lifetime. You'll probably replace this phone in 6-24 months. Hell you might not even bring it in the car the one time you have an accident, or couldn't be bothered bolting it to the dash. 4) In an accident which would be high impact the chances of the internal cameras being so stressed under the G-forces to the point they won't actually record something are so high. Plus the chance of someone finding the resultant phone to bother getting the details? Whats to know, you had a high speed impact. If you're alive you should be worried about other issues.. So i think its pretty selfish to ask someone to code something that will never ever be used just because you are too cheap to go and buy a purpose designed box. Just my 2 cents. Guest Piemole Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 (edited) What is it with this forum? Why can't somebody post an idea and not have 15 dickheads shitcan him for it. Firefighters attend calls to motor accidents on a daily basis. If they could turn up and have the chance to look at a device that will show them exactly what as happened in the accident it would help no end with planning for extrication and also the mechanism of injury for the patient. If they turn up and the think is destroyed so be it they will crack on. Seriously, this forum sucks ass, you ask a question and you get 15 little internet geeks shitcan your question because you arn't as smart as they are. C'mon (to the people I am talking about you know who you are, to the rest of you, the good people who want to help, thanks. I have found lots of good stuff on here and it is good to see that there are some out there who genuinely want to help) Edited June 16, 2009 by Piemole
Guest lastnikita Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 with the help of samsung sdk, it could be coded damn fast.. record, loop, store if tilted. real simple, and could be used when something fun happens too :D

Like the moron on the crotch rocket goes and pops a wheelie before dropping it in front of you, you can record it since it started recording prior to the event. I can see the youtube vids now!! Next problem after getting the app would be getting a mount that doesn't block the cam.... Wonder if we can modify an existing one... just cut out a hole for the cam with a dremel or something.....
