Verizon may not have the iPhone 3G S, but the sequel to Samsung's popular iPhone pretender, the Omnia, will be coming to Verizon later this year, Samsung announced at an event on Monday in Manhattan. As for the exact timing of the Omnia 2's launch, that's still up in the air, as Samsung reps said that Verizon had a tight leash on what info could--and couldn't--release at this time.

But here's what we know, and it looks pretty good:

  • Network: HSDPA 7.2 Mbps/HSUPA 5.76Mbps; EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900MHz; UMTS 900/1900/2100MHz
  • 65K WVGA AMOLED Display (3.7-inch, 480 x 800--largest AMOLED display yet in a phone)
  • Advanced R-type Touch Screen
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional (upgradeable to WM 6.5)
  • 5-megapixel CMOS camera with autofocus and face-detection, plus geotagging and a photo editor
  • Video recording at 30fps@720x480, plus video editor (trim video, audio dubbing, live dubbing, add subtitle)
  • Audio supported: MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, WMDRM, OMA DRM 2.1, plus FM radio
  • Video supported: DivX, XviD, H.263, H.264, WMV9, MPEG4
  • A-GPS with Navigation (3D Map)/LBS
  • TouchWiz 2.0 UI with Mobile Widget/3D Media Gate
  • Multitask manager/3D Interactive Games
  • Bluetooth Stereo Headset (A2DP)
  • WiFi
  • 2GB/8GB/16GB of internal memory (3 different models)
  • microSDHC expansion slot (up to 32GB)
  • Up to 10 hours (3G) talk time
  • Up to 430 hours (3G) standby time
  • Dimensions: 4.65 x 2.36 x 0.47 inches (HWD)

Previews of Omnia II from GSMArena

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i8000_omnia_2-review-362.php

The only thing I like about it is the display. I dont think I'll be getting it though, unless the cookers are going to abandon Omnia and move to Omnia II. Hopefully we'll be able to port the new apps over to Omnia too. Maybe if the WiFi is stable then I might get it, but I already bought two Omnias this year =s.

I like to look of the Omnia Pro (my last phone was the HTC Universal and I do find that I miss my keyboard!) might keep me out of the HTC camp for a while longer.

The only thing I like about it is the display.

You don't like 2 and a half weeks of standby time?

"Up to 430 hours (3G) standby time"

You don't like high quality video recording?

Video recording at 30fps@720x480

Seems like it would have to have a significantly strong processor to be able to do that so hopefully means it should fly through windows (which is a bit clunky currnetly).

I would like to know why they are releasing a 2gb version.. seems silly to go backwards especially in what is essentially a "prestige" pda. Its like offering a ferrari with a 4cyl engine for the posers.

edit: Duh

CPU 800 MHZ

Slightly larger all around. Bit over a centimeter longer and a half centimeter wider.

How about the display in the sunlight? Does it show better than our Omnia? Since I drive a convertible, I cannot see the display of the Omnia and this is the only reason why I would want to move to the iPhone, whose screen is a little better in the sunlight.

I will definitely get one, the Omnia II rocks, and please, Omnia freaks, stop comparing phones you can't compare, like Omnia (winmo smartphone) and iPhone (apple gadget). Compare it to the HTC family, it will make more sense! :D

yeah.....:D

u cant compare an Omnia to an iPhone...

Ones good and full of useful features that can be accessed and used daily. The other is an iPhone. ;)

Compare Omnia to other WinMo's at least.

The only thing i liek about the iPhone is its styling and quality of build (oh and the capacitive screen :D)

Laters.

Omnia II rocks!!!!!

Y'know what? I honestly like the look of the Omnia I900 to the new one...being purely shallow and all, it just looks cooler :D

(that and the fact that I've got it hacked out to do exactly what I want ;))

Slappa i know what you mean ive finally got the custom rom i always wanted and all apps working sweet on my Omnia...but it doesnt mean there is no hope for the Omnia II, i know chefs here will try and tackle it.. and as soon as its out it be awsome for basic use calls txt music vids...thats all i need until the fun fully begins when it gets to the point as our Omnias are at at :D
