Guest somedude Posted July 1, 2009 Report Posted July 1, 2009 Thank god for the ROM leak, or else i wouldve been real pissed lol. Even though i have gps up and running, its still a damn shame that verizon, given 7 months, has failed to resolve this issue. 7 months in technology terms is more like a few years, as the Omnia ii is on the horizon, already making the first omnia seem obsolete(even though it isnt). Speaking of Omnia ii, im probably going to sell my omnia on ebay and use the earnings towards omnia ii(thats if verizon doesnt rape the omnia ii like it did the first omnia)
Guest dwallersv Posted July 1, 2009 Report Posted July 1, 2009 They know, of course, about the leak. This worked to their advantage, in a perverse sort of way. They also know without a doubt that the leak oiled the squeaky wheel. The type of people most upset about this are also the same people that would have the motive, participation in internet forums, and skills to upgrade and install the leak, satisfying 90% of their (our) issue with this feature. However, not sending out an official update with GPS unlocked allows them to continue to squeeze a revenue stream out of a likely much larger customer base that is using and paying for VZNav. So, they've largely solved their problem -- lawsuit threats are essentially gone, still making about as much money with VZNav as before the leak. They now have a much weaker incentive to actually get this out, and a strong incentive do delay as long as possible, or even cancel if they can get away with it. Given the public promises, I think the latter unlikely. However, I would expect, at this point, further delays (probably months) with some excuse about further testing to ensure our security on their network (the standard Verizon effluent about why they cripple GPS).
Guest Tim-H Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Well said dwallersv, I remember following the unlock effort when verizon released info that they were going to unlock the GPS. A lot of the activity died down as most people thought they were going to fix the problem before it could be hacked. Thank god people didn't give up and someone found that self righteous asshole AZNTEGRA or we'd still screwed. I think if we didn't get the leak we still wouldn't have gotten a release though. They would likely just say there were security compromises in unlocking the GPS and say they were not able to safely unlock it for the consumers. They have already tried calming down the people that are still outraged by sending employees to this board to try tell us Verizon really cares about the customer and they just want us to be safe, thats why the release hasnt been made. I hope everyone is smart enough to see through this BS and realize what is really going on. I will say that when im in the market for a new phone I wont even give one with locked down hardware a second look. Those of you complaining about Verizon pushing out updates: Verizon is picky for a reason, if it has issues then they will not release it. As they are very customer service orientated, they will not push buggy software out to current customers. Of course they want their VZnav software to work on the update as it is a huge source of revenue but not only that, many many customers are extremely satisfied with VZnav. It is a solid GPS software solution that provides all of the features you'd come to expect with a high end navigation unit. Verizon is not the type to throw out an update and just simply put it off. Believe it or not, they do want their customers to be happy. As the largest carrier in the US, obviously they are doing something right. As a major account manager for Verizon Wireless and having formerly worked with the Verizon dev team, I can tell you they are always hard at work. They are also extremely picky even when it comes to the smallest of bugs... Take the BlackBerry storm for example, the launch OS was extremely slow but it still did what it needed to accomplish. They were one of the last to push out an update and rejected many that RIM had sent to them. As they were simply too buggy. Found HERE How stupid do they think we are?

Very stupid, as the general populace is always thought of, and often true. But most of us aren't the general populace ;) What they say here could easily be their reason, true or not, for further delay of the update, and if the chance legal action was taken, it could basically shutdown the whole thing, especially if they do have testing ROMs. Its good PR and many people will buy it. The fact is, all they really need is to put in the stuff they took out. Theres no security issues whatsoever, especially considering other phones from VZW support full GPS out of the box.
Guest blazingwolf Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Second post on this page shows a reply about the update from Verizon. For what it is worth. http://community.vzw.com/vrzn/board/messag...=74&page=52
Guest Doc007 Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Anyone interested in starting a petition to hold Verizon on their promise to unlock the GPS and aGPS by the 1/2 of 2009?? Similar to how they did fixed this problem for other Verizon phones (ex HTC). Who would be the best person to contact in this instance?
Guest necosino Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I will PM you with the contact details ;) Unfortunately, they did not make an official statemetn about the first half of '09, so that idea is beat They also have no obligation to release any updates for the Omnia, so really all we can do is yell and shake our fists at them and hope they can't block it out...
Guest dwallersv Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 At this point, we have a solution, even if it isn't "official". Enough of us have been field-testing this release now for months, and I think we can at this point testify that it is pretty stable. I know I haven't had any problems at all with CC20. So, it seems a bad idea to me to bug Verizon at this point. Like I said earlier in the thread, I'm pretty confident we'll get an official release eventually, and I'd be shocked if it didn't happen this calendar year. Let them milk their less sophisticated customers that subscribe to VZNav for awhile...
Guest necosino Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 Let them milk their less sophisticated customers that subscribe to VZNav for awhile... They have long since paid for the R&D and overhead costs of VZNav, it's sheer profits for them now.. Screw that.. ;)

GPS should have been unlocked in the first place. The CC20 fix doesn't unlock aGPS. I would like to have both GPS and aGPS. They started allowing it for other phones so they should do it for the omnia.
