Guest mygraine Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 While wondering through staples I saw a program called Street Atlas USA 2009 plus, which promised to have gps support on wimmo phones. I was unsure but ponied up the cash anyway and sure enough the gps works great. It will never replace google maps but it is a nice thing to have on my phone. Transfering maps can be a pain, as the phone side program does not use the internet connection at all, but if you are into hiking and such in areas without cell service you can view maps and add waypoints. anyways just thought i would report my findings
Guest Tim-H Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 ... if you are into hiking and such in areas without cell service you can view maps and add waypoints... This is way more helpful than it sounds. Thanks!
Guest mygraine Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 I live in Montana so I do a lot of fishing and hike skiing and such so I get tired of the extra weight of a gps, so this feature is quite nice for me. The "Plus" version allows for drawing on custom maps but costs like $60 the next step down is like $40. glad that I could help someone.
Guest Tim-H Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 (edited) I'm in washington and hiking up in the mountains I usually can't get coverage. Just a couple days ago I had to use my phones gps, luckily I got a quick signal and was able to download the sattelite map from google before I lost it again. I wish there was a way to shut off the data reciever on the phone without shutting off the GPS. It drains the battery switching in and out of service for a second at a time. Guest mygraine Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 i just now went into connections and changed the broadband number from #777 to #7777 which makes the data connection unusable, then i turned on the gps and fired up street atlus and got a gps lock in 2 minutes. maybe that spb gprs monitor program will kill the connection and still allow the gps to work. I'll look into that.
