Guest jp75 Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I'm so frustrated at not being able to update to any of theses great ROMs as I run Vista on my PC. Is the Vista issue one that can be resolved or am I just stuck here looking on? I downloaded VM Workstation to give that a go but now I can't find my old XP disc - probably gave it away to someone ... Are there any other options?
Guest Lost-in-omniA Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Same Problem here.. I have the disc but when i rum WM Workstation it doesn't allow me to turn on the virtual machine and asks for the serial number. It was suppose to be a trial version and i have just download it from the official website. I'm so frustrated at not being able to update to any of theses great ROMs as I run Vista on my PC. Guest ptmaniac Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 (edited) you can always download the windows 7 rc and virtual xp for free, it should work for flashing. not the fastest solution, but at least you won't have to buy anything (that is until the rc expires in 6 months or so)... Guest Rob V Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I can't tell if we're talking here about the i900 or i910. But I have been flashing my i910 directly from a Windows 7 PC for months and have never had a bit of trouble (running UMDL Omnia 2.3). Win 7 and Vista are very similar, and I know that others have had similar success with Vista. The directions are the same for either: First, you need to download and install Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 (WMDC) from the MS site. Note that WMDC is for Vista or Windows 7 only, and is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. After installing, plug in your Omnia's USB cable, set up a sync relationship (you can uncheck all the boxes if you just want to set up a partnership and don't really want to sync any data), and be sure that you can connect successfully with WMDC. This verifies physical connectivity. (If you have trouble connecting with ActiveSync, be sure the USB setting on your Omnia is set for USB ActiveSync and not USB Mass Storage.) Next, install the Samsung CDMA mobile drivers on your PC. At least with my Verizon i910, I found these on the red-labeled CD that came with the phone. I have also attached this driver below if you don't have it handy (d/l'ed from the Samsung website). Although its release notes talk only about Win 2K and XP, it will install just fine in Vista or Win 7 - no compatibility mode settings or other tricks required. Now unplug your Omnia from the PC. In WMDC, mouse over 'Mobile Device Settings' and click on 'Connection settings'. In the popup dialog, uncheck all the boxes. This is critical. (After flashing, you can turn these all back on to re-enable ActiveSync.) Shut down your Omnia completely by holding down the Power button until the 'goodbye' theme plays, the screen goes dark, and the button is not illuminated. Start the UDML app on the PC, open the new ROM image (either complete or just PDA as appropriate), and then click 'check for devices'. The boxes for devices 1-8 should now all read 'waiting for device' (just going from memory here, but that should be close... ;) ) Reconnect your Omnia to the USB cable and turn it on with the power button. The UDML app should immediately identify your device and the flash process will begin, as shown in messages on both the device and the UDML app dialog. Do not touch or unplug your device until it completes, or you'll end up bricking it! When the flash completes, the Omnia will automatically reboot - at that point, you can unplug the USB cable and should be good to go. I don't think I've missed anything here, and this process has always worked perfectly for me. But again, the disclaimer is that this is based totally on my experience with the i910 and UDML Omnia 2.3. If you're on an i900 and/or are using a different PC app for flashing, I'm afraid you're on your own. But hopefully, these same steps will yield success for you even with a slightlhy different configuration! SamsungModem_xp.zip
