Guest G1LIW Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Just got off the phone from orange retentions, having seen the blurb for the TG01, and thinking "ok, I'm with Orange, out of contract now, so let's see what Orange can do"... Note that I'm well out of contract lock from their Canary 30 calling package (with no data plan). I was on the phone for something like 20 minutes to a fairly helpful (for a change I got an intelligent human there!) bloke, but the best they could offer was two years (24 months) at 50 quid a month including 1gig data (that's a tenner a month) and a one-off charge of 100 quid for the Toshiba TG01 handset itself. OUCH ;) Not good. Think it's time to (1) revert to my original idea of a lesser phone (TP2 or X1 come immediately to mind) and (2) look at another service provider (T-Mobile comes to mind on data/phones alone) ....
Guest jamjamjam Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) Ok its your lucky morning! There are two options... 1. Buy another phone on a network who will offer you a good deal, sell that, then buy a TG01 of Ebay (there is two on there already) and unlock it with a Turbo/X/Rebel SIM (JUST tested it working on mine ;) ) 2. I dont know if this sounds like a good deal to you, but I got this deal from Orange... 1200 mins Unlimited texts Free broadband Magic number 500MB Internet Free phone 18 Months £36.70 a month (thats a brand new contract, not retentions) I got that price (its usually £44) by asking them to beat the deal found herehttp://www.buymobilephones.net/mobile-phon...Internet/896017 Hope thats useful info to you! Guest thebigshazbowski Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Just got off the phone from orange retentions, having seen the blurb for the TG01, and thinking "ok, I'm with Orange, out of contract now, so let's see what Orange can do"... Not sure what is going on there - but Orange generally give the same deal to new customers as they do upgraders. I for example was on a Raccoon package similar to Jam's pay £40 a month (well 39.20 since the vat change). I went into the shop said hey my contract expires next month can I upgrade now? - they said sure. I said gimme the TG01 - they said here ya go - free! Maybe because I've always been a 35-40 quid customer that counts on some sort of scale? In any case just phone again - pick the option that says you're leaving Orange and tell them you're going over to O2 to buy an iPhone. They should give in quickly. Although - I'd be interested in knowing how/why they offered you 1gb data as I was told 500mb is the max (unless I pay for a 250mb add-on at £8 extra a month)
Guest jamjamjam Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 I have since cancelled my contract because of that very issue, the pathetic 512mb limit. I phoned multiple times to get the low down on the data usage options, here's the responses I got... 1. 500MB is it, no other options 2. you can add another 500MB package to give a total of 1GB but no more 3. there is a bundle that can be added only by customer services which is £7.50 and has no limit. Basically, they are clueless!! I too would be interested to hear about this 1GB data package.
Guest G1LIW Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) JamJamJam - Briefly, the 1gig package appears to be a retentions thing only, as I understand it, not normally available. This may change, but I doubt it, given orange's track record. Interesting on the package they offered you... remember, though, I'm currently on a non-contract (one month notice) canary 30 (extended) plan PLUS home broadband and the extra fiver a month to make the home broadband "unlimited". thebigshazbowski - You lucky wotsit - they never even suggested that to me :D All - If it weren't for the requirement for Windows Mobile on my next handset, I'd be shifting everything over to Virgin in a heartbeat, btw - their packages are actually intelligent, and the amount of airtime and data they give you costs PEANUTS compared to Orange :D For those that are wondering, here are my monthly comms costs, less two-way radio, which costs me naff all (I'm a licenced radio ham, and they recently dumped the cost of our licences, WHOOPEE!!! :D) Orange Mobile ======== £36 (average, includes OrangeCare Insurance) per month BT Landline ========== £25 per month Orange Home Broadband = £5 (rounded up) per month ====================================== Total ============ £66 per month Bear in mind all the maths must either be revenue NEUTRAL or better yet, revenue NEGATIVE ;) Now, if I leave Orange (VERY likely, to be brutally honest, it's just a question of when...), the home broadband immediately leaps up £15 to a shade under £20/month. So, any mobile phone package MUST come in at or under £20, UNLESS it's bundled in with home broadband, in which case it can rise to £40 (maybe even £45 if they're nice!). You see why I'm looking very closely at the financial aspects of all this... :D Cheers for the comments thus far :) Keep 'em Coming :o Roger Edited July 15, 2009 by G1LIW
Guest Dogmann55 Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 (edited) Hi G1LIW, Well I'm also an existing customer but no where near my upgrade yet after checking out the TGO1 deals on the Web and not liking the tariffs offered i added the Racoon 45 which makes the TGO1 free. I then phoned customer services as wanted it added to my account and this is the deal i got. Racoon 45 @£39.14pm reduced from £44.04 due to £5pm online discount on a 18 month contract. 1,200 minutes 500 Texts Unlimited UK land line calls Orange Sat Nav inclusive 500Mb Any time Mobile Internet Free itemised billing and priority customer service I have to say that's cheaper then VodaFone want for a N97 or Orange for an I8910HD and i think the TG01 is a much better devcie than either of those, i had an i8910HD from Orange and returned it and had a trial of the N97 from WOM World and wouldn't buy it. Also i have to say the priority customer service really is great as suddenly last night my TG01 suddenly stopped moving between Portrait and landscape view after speaking to them at just after midnight. I tried a soft reset and then full reset neither resolved the issue so called them back. It was now after 00:45 and got straight through my new not refurbished TG01 is being couriered to me and will arrive between 6-10pm tonight. Marc Edited July 16, 2009 by Dogmann55

Guest Alderian Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 Persisted Myself and got a fairly good deal. I was on Racoon 25 and just short of my 18 month contract finishing. First of all, the bands that Orange uses: 1. Bands are 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest, 5 the highest 2. Apparently one of the major factors in where you are in the banding is the amount of text'ing you use. For example, I rarely use texts although call wise I'm quite a big user, I am on Band 2 - my daughter, who's on a Dolphin plan, who text's more than talks on a lower tariff, is on Band 4!!! Right, my deal. I've phoned up a few times to retentions, mostly getting people who basically repeat what I see on the Internet for new customers, with the occasional feature excluded from my deal. Yesterday I got someone who knew what to do. First I asked how much the phone would be. After a bit of tapping through the screens he asked me if I could go on hold a second (I assume to talk to a supervisor or something). What he came back with was: Racoon 30 Websave (as new deals on website) = £25/m, 24 month contract, all the trimmings as what's offered on the website for this contract, phone cost £77 But I wanted it cheaper than that, so I suggested the Racoon 35 websave (24 month) = £30/m - he said fine, all the trimmings as before - phone cost £28.50! I'm sure if I waited until I was actually out of contract I could have got lower, but I'm currently using an ailing HTC Universal which I've repaired several times. Can't wait until it arrives today, and perhaps I can recoup the cost on selling my HTC Universal and spare parts accumulated on eBay! Guest Malt_Vinegar Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 I got my TG01 a month ago, free from orange. Didnt change any tariffs, i dont text much either. I have never paid for an upgrade from orange for the last 5 years. Regardless of what phone i mention, they always tell me its free.
Guest justj Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 I have been conned by orange twice. first time, it was few years ago. The orange signal is very poor around my area so I rang orange customer service and ask for their advise. I was told I can cancel the contrace with no charge, so I say "yes" I would like to cancel my contract. Few days later I got a bill for almost £600 pounds for earliy cancellaton. And another few hunderd quid phone bill, because appearantly someone use the number number after I cancel the contract and them bill me for it. And then last month I took on orange pay as you go as they have a good deal on international calls. I ordered a sim card, register online pick the correct animal pack, top up for 10 quid. They suppose to charge me 8p per minutes but my £10 credit ran out in 12 minutes. I call customer service and complained, was told will get a refund a month later nothing. Guess I won;t be using Orange ever again.

Justj, in future if you are told something by an advisor over the phone and the company go back on it, ask them to find the recorded conversation when the promise was made. This has gotten me out of a few contracts with various providers (BT Broadband for example). Its always a good idea to make a note of the person you spoke to and the day and time to. You are entitled to a copy of that conversation under the data protection act. Just to add my experience. Had a contract a month from being finished, went online and got: Free handset (TG01) Racoon 25 websave (£20 a month) 18 months 200 minutes, 100 texts, unlimited land line calls. Been with Orange for nearly 10 years now and don't have any major complaints, maybe i'm just lucky. Edited August 19, 2009 by leeston2379
Guest WPearsall Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 nothing new but this is a good way to get a good deal... ive been on orange for a number of years... i had an orange contract for about 4 yrs, and then they gave me a crap deal, so i switched to PAYG, and got a contract elsewhere... topping up the phone once every cpl of months to keep my number [it was a business line, so needed it keeping] then coming to renewing my contact after my o2 one [which i replaced my orange one with] i called into orange n went "so what you going to offer me to get me to return..." they gave me a decent package, decent fone, n decent price... great for a cpl of yrs.. - even though my phone [ericsson w890i] caused me more trouble then anything with needing to flash the firmware every few months... then come to new renewal... i called n they were arsey... wouldnt give me a good deal so i went to them "ok, well i'll call back in a bit, im just going to call o2 to see their deals.." called o2, and THEY were offering me BETTER deals then Orange - im guessing since they knew what they lost from my previous contact - bills were always over 100 since i do a lot of 0845 / 0870 / 0800 calls - which are sadly not on any call plans :( so i called orange back, told them i wanted my pac code... since i was switching provider and wanted to port my number... (didnt realise i could do that the first time round :() orange went "what deal they offered you" i told them... they matched the deal and actually gave me a £5 discount on the deal... not sure if its because my acc always charges like 130 - 160GBP then suddenly it went to like 15 quid for a whole yr then back to 130 / 160 n saw the logic... but if you have balls to play hardball they normally give in... - my sister was paying like 35 a month, i called for her and: she has a new phone, pays 15 a month now, and same data / calls / txts as before - cant tlk fairer then that.... i have to be honest... i call orange CS a lot... ive always found them VERY helpful [except for a month or so when all their calls went to india - that soon died? - not sure what happened there...] but i like their service so do like to stay with them (better the devil you know and all... ;)) LONG STORY SHORT... Play the operators against each other... find your best deal off your current (say they say 300 mins unlim txt n web for 20 quid... they will most likely be able to do it like 600 mins, unlim txt n web for 15... or better... then call a rival n say "ive been offered this.. what can you do what phone?" if you want a great phone, dont expect it to be fifteen quid... but: consider, 15 quid plan... 18 months, half decent phone... SELL The half decent one for say 100 or 150... go on ebay, add fifty or so quid n get ur good phone... or: pay an extra 20 a month for 2 yrs = 450 quid extra give or take... do the maths ;) - cheap plan + seperate phone is better... or: say "i want this plan,.. how much downpayment for XXXX phone..." - less hassle but costs more... :)
Guest razerbug Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 it's all about the haggle, and knowing your gadgets inside out: I had: LG Viewty (KU990) on T-mobile flext35, paid 37.99 a month which included data plan I now have: TG01 on Orange, Dolphin (why the stupid names?!) plan with 600 mins (I never used more than 100 with tmob), unlimited texts, and data plan (inc orange maps). Paid nothing for the TG01, plan is £29 a month... I saved money by getting one of the most powerful handsets on the market. I just told them I wouldn't change network unless they gave me the phone for free, after 3 call backs and "let me talk to my manager" moments they gave me anything I wanted. day later Orange/T-mob announced they're merging! much WIN! was had that day... the big thing was every time they tried to sell me something I out geeked them knowing exactly how every handset they mentioned worked, its specs, and how networks work/charge. eventually their pre-written sales script runs out and they cave. having said that I've yet to have my first Orange bill - maybe they'll shaft me somewhere unexpected :-o
Guest dunbad Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 I got the 1gb package now. Bit of a long story. Basically i was on the 600 minutes package with free 500 meg of internet. After the first month i established that 500 meg was not good enough for me. So i asked about upgrading the dataplan with some bolt on. was told i couldnt do this until after month ten of my contract. another phone call and they said i could pay an additional ten quid a month for 1 gb, but id lose the free 500 meg. and another phone call a very nice lady said i could drop my talk plan, then pay the ten quid and get the 1gb of data but because of the drop in plan my bill wouldnt increase. So anyway i went ahead with that but it didnt happen. When i asked what was going on they denied all knowledge and said that arrangement could never have happened. They claimed it was impoosible to alter price plans at the start of a contract. So anyway initially i was told that not all phone conversations are recorded but kept chasing it up and eventually they listened to the phone recording and gave me what the very nice lady suggested to me!!!
Guest hayzy00 Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 well my tg01's got a bit of a story too, I haven't had much luck with phones recently, I quite fancied a touch screen this sort of time last year and went round town with my girlfriend to find one. Im on PAYG with orange because I used to be on blyk- the advert thingy and im a student so im quite poor! my girlfriend though was on a contract but the company JAG mobiles who sold her the contract had her phones in for repair. We were both looking at the LG COOKIE obviously she wanted the pink 1, I managed to get the cookie for her but after comparing it with the viewty i bought that on 02 PAYG becase it was unlocked an about £120-130. At first i loved the phone the camera was amazing and it looked well smart. I bought a leather case for it but what i didnt realize was that the case had magnets inside and was pressing the screen constantly and flattening the battery, this must have had a worse effect because i couldnt use the touch screen at all after a while, it refused to orient and topping up with 16 digit number was stupid, took me half an hour one time, i could get 12 numbers right then bang it tells me i pressed something else!! Anyway i went back to using my old sony ericcson w810i, i had a 4gig pro duo in it so music wise it was spot on and near enough indistructable. My girlfriends cookie is still working fine btw. I got some money from family for xmas and i started thinking bout getting a phone, a few friends have iphone and i was blown away by how usefull it is, I tried buying a hiphone actually in oct from china but ended up getting stung. I saw in the car phone warehouse they had the nokia 5530 for about £120, looking at the specs it was 3g and had wifi connectivity the only phone in my price range which could do these things. I had a look at the phone in the shop and i wasnt sure about getting another touch screen and it didnt seem to be too great anyway. I though id go to orange cos i had a phone fund and see what they can offer me. I told them i wanted a phone with wifi and 3g, if it wasnt any different from my ericcson then what would be the point. One of the salesman asked why i felt i wanted wifi and 3g etc. my first response was that i wanted to be free to browse the internet -youtube etc wherever i was. He told me (whilst getting his brand new one out) that the only phone realy capable of this (flash i suppose) was the iphone and its a lot of money. thats when i noticed this huge black screen on the shelf which said PAYG 400 - 149.99 i asked them what it was and they started laughing, saying its a toshiba windows phone but they havnt been able to sell any so they are selling them cheap on PAYG, i had a quick look at it - I thought badword me- let me take it and go before they change their mind!! they were honestly shocked that someone was going to buy one i guess they didnt bother to look at the specs!! I had £50 phone fund so took it down to less than a ton, does everthing Iphone does, is a bit more powerfull and im so used to windows, ive never owned an ipod or a mac, I set a program called easy today launcher as my today screen which allows a desktop with shortcuts making the phone feel and look like my desktop. Office on there is perfect for my studies and i can watch youtube after all!! Anyway i absolutely love the phone... sorry bout the long post!!!! cant sleep for some reason
Guest hayzy00 Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 oh yeah and i changed to dolphin which gives me 50mb (i think) per week and shed loads of texts for my £10 a month. If needed "unlimited" internet (fair use policy) for £5 bundle for 7 days or £1 for the day

Brother, you have a thriller writer inside you!!! Well, here in Spain , at the beginning it was the same history (and even today) Telefonica salesmen want to buy Iphones (perhaps they win more with them) and they don't know anything about TG01 (even some of them said me that TG01 was unknown for them....and it was exposed on the shelf!!!) Amazing Edited January 24, 2010 by xdalover
Guest serialkillazzs Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 get one from orange unlock it and go with o2 or 3 handset can be unlocked for a tenner via code and not rebel sim xsim etc im on 3 in northern ireland, call quality excellent on handset, no problems so far touch wood! 02 simplicity plans free o2 to o2 calls and internet £15 a month, and they do not care how much internet usage yo use, or get one of those o2 iphone sims with internet if there still working! depends on whose networks best 4 you, orange is pathetic over here. hopefully tmobile orange deal will sort that out this year!!
