Omnia i910 Update - no luck with GPS

I just upgraded my Omnia i910 to the firmware found on Samsung's new website. It is my understanding that this unlocks the GPS built into the phone. However, when using Google maps it only shows the cell phone tower location and not mine. I have tried every COM port but for some reason it will not say I have a GPS. The only thing close I get to is COM8. When this option is chose it says seeking GPS satellites (57321256) or some other big random number. So I installed Tom Tom 6 and tried all the different settings there but still nothing. Has anyone else had any luck? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Go to settings/personal/phone - services tab - select gps, change settings. Switch to location on.

Go outside, start your gps program. Wait a few minutes.

Actually, sorry, should have mentioned I did that. What COM settings are you using?

I usually let windows manage it, but the correct settings should be COM 8 baud 57600

I should say that when it gives you those large numbers its normal. It sometimes does that when it's trying to lock on to sattelites. At least it did with CC20

I am beginning to think there is something wrong with my individual phone. I tried the "managed by windows" option and it said there was no gps receiver. Then I tried the COM 8 baud 57600 and it said it could not find any satellites after about 10 min. I am in Iowa (no tall buildings/civilation) which is about perfect for satellites. I have a bluetooth external one and it finds satellites no problem. So I tried the COM 8 baud 57600 in Tom Tom 6 as well and it too did not find any satellites. I am stumped but it seems to be my luck that I would get a defective phone.

Wow... I REALLY need some help.

I have the update. I HAVE turned on Location in the GPS settings. I can't get locks INITIALLY with google maps. BUT if I turn on VZNavigator and then exit.... THEN turn on google maps it locks. It's like I have to use VZNavigator to 'initialize' the gps.

Also I can NEVER get a lock - or anything for that matter - with Bing. It just says I have no GPS.

Please help, I know you guys can help me solve this. I really wanna drop the extra $10/mo for VZNav

Your first GPS lock will just take quite a while.

Make sure you go to settings - personal - phone - services - gps - location ON, and do a soft reset.

Then what I would do is download BAF GPS Toggle, it's a today plugin that allows you to turn on your GPS. Turn it on, and will start seeking satellites, then go outside and wait 10-20 minutes and see if GPS Toggle says seeking: #, or Locked: #. If it says locked, your GPS is locked and you should be able to use Google Maps, livesearch, w/e.

If it keeps saying seeking: #, then you may not be able to get a lock where you are, or if it says seeking: 0, either the gps isn't on (do another soft reset) or your reception area is REALLY bad, lol..

But when I run VZNavigator it locks Quickly. Definitely not 10-20 minutes.... And Why does Google maps lock quickly after I've used VZNav but keeps searching If I don't go that route first.

I have read all this stuff about no location but i cant acutally find it in my phone. In the settings I go to the phone tab and clck on services and I get a box with the options CALL BARRING, CALL FORWARDING, CALLER WAITING and CALLER ID in it but no GPS. Below this there is a box saying GET SETTINGS. IS this a simple matter of just upgrading the firmware?

Yes, you need to be on CC20 or CF03 in order to have unlocked GPS.

Sorry for my stupidity, but what does that mean? How do I get this?

Thanks

Because VZ Navigator is created by Verizon and they want it to have the advantage over any third party application, otherwise nobody would pay for it.

The reason Google Maps locks quickly after you used VZ Nav is because it locks on to the sattelites and lets your gps reciever know where to look for them.

BAFs gps toggle will keep a warm lock on the sattelites so your phone will be ready to go whenever you want to use a GPS program.

I've tried everything suggested and google maps tells me I am in russia near the border of poland...... (I'm in western new york) :)

It does do the "Seeking gps signals.. (43857384753894)" garbage too. After about 10 minutes it either thinks im in russia or tells me gps signal is too weak. I've tried this outside on a clear day too. Maybe my omnias case is blocking the signal? Its just a thin hard plastic case.

In google maps, leave the GPS settings as windows managed, and follow the steps I listed above. Once GPS toggle says locked, open Google maps and you will have instant lock..

I also upgraded to CF03 and the GPS did not work until I did another Hard Reset after the upgrade. Also mine will only work as COM0 at 4800 baud. I tried COM8 to no avail.

This might be a dumb question but, can u use this program without using the today screen? I actually like the widgets screen and don't really want to change to this today screen. Great application, but dull screen. Thanks much. Later

Yes, just turn off widgets in the today settings screen, turn BAF on, then turn widgets back on. BAF will keep working in the background.

Success! Seven months after getting my Verizon Wireless Samsung Omnia SCH-i910 I am finally using Google Maps with the internal GPS!

This has been my single-minded goal since turning this amazing device on...well...right after using the device as a tethered modem, getting my corporate e-mail and calendar updates, surfing the web and, oh yeah, taking telephone calls.

The last step to a GPS-enabled Google Maps Mobile was to download and install and activate BAF GPS Toggle. http://www.baf.cc/gpstoggle

I turned on the BAF GPS Toggle GPS, waited a few seconds - out doors - and watched as BAF GPS locked-in 5 satellites.

Then I launched Google Maps. Yes! Eureka! Google Maps immediately positioned me on planet Earth

The step prior to that was to:

Make sure and go to Settings --> Personal --> Phone --> Services --> GPS --> Location = ON, and do a soft reset.

I did the step below too, but I doubt it made any difference, but if you want to know what ports your GPS is using and at what baud rate, then you will want this normally hidden control applet available:

If you can’t view External GPS under settings, then you need to edit your registry. By using a registry editor you can unhide the External GPS control panel by deleting any “Redirect” or “Hide” keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Controlpanel\GPS Settings. Warning, be sure to backup your registry first in case you mess up.

It's nice to see something about GPS in my system control panel!

To do the above, however, I had to first download a Desktop Registry Editor ;-)

I got The CeRegEditor which is a registry editor for all devices based on PocketPC2003, WindowsMobile, WindowsCE.

Much nicer to edit the registry for Windows Mobile 6.1 using my laptop and the USB-connected OMNIA!

CeRegEditor can be downloaded from:

None of this would have been possible without downloading and carefully running the SAMSUNG SCH-i910 ROM Upgrade!!:

What a strange trip Verizon Wireless has put us through to use the Samsung OMNIA SCH-i910 internal GPS!

The Samsung SCH-i910 is a great device. In fact, it's capabilities are mind boggling and with the new ROM, touch screen usage is way better and generally the entire experience is much more usable:

I want to thank this forum for it's persistence and willingness to share information, since neither Samsung, Google Maps, Microsoft Windows Mobile or Verizon Wireless was able to get me over the hump on getting Google Maps working with the GPS on this device using Verizon's very capable network!

Here is a question for all knowing. I just installed the unlocked ROM from theidocto. Should I install this new version from Samsung? Im not sure if the GPS is working now or not I had some other issues I worked on and was planning on trying out the GPS today. I do like most of the new features from the ROM install. Should I install Upgrade CFo3 ?

Im having the same problem too...its hard for me to get a GPS lock. I have tried Quick GPS...GPS toggle...still no quick lock. Even if I'm outside with full service I keep getting the weak signal message. I was at the beach trying to get a lock...and nothing! Dont get me wrong, it locks occasionally but I was hoping to get a reasonable lock time. Im thinking about re-flashing the Official Update ROM and see if it fixes the problem....thennn i'll re-flash a 6.5 cooked ROM and see it affect the gps.
