Guest necosino Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 So, I've noticed more and more frequently that people are either posting questions that have been answered 50+ times, even with their own threads created to address the question. Or, they will post the same question in 5+ places! This could all be avoided by simply READING. I'd like to remind everyone of the search function in Modaco that will usually bring up your questions quite easily. Or try out google, since you can tag threads with META tags, making the thread show up in a google search. Also remember that some problems aren't just on the Omnia. Try searching for "Windows Mobile how do I..." since that will usually answer your general use questions, too.. What happens when people keep reposting the same questions over and over? Some people that have the answered get frustrated, and either ignore the question, reply with a "do a search" (What I do when I get frustrated), or just copy and paste the same answers over and over (What I tend to do, too). This is bad for the person asking the question, because they will either not get an answer, or get the wrong answer. It is also bad for Modaco since each thread and post takes up space on their servers, and wastes Paul's $$$!!. It is also bad for frequent users, since we end up wasting time on questions that have already been addressed and solved, when we could be working to solve new problems, or working on development projects or new ROMs. (I'm considering releasing mine sometime, lol...) Just my two cents, flame if you must :)
Guest semmtexx Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Thanks, this needed to be said. i admit that sometimes i ask questions that have already been answered, but only within a thread. New threads should not be started over and over and over with first looking for the answer. I think that when people register for this site, they should not be allowed to post unless they first read such rules and, I dunno maybe take a quiz?! LOL I know that might be going to far but I definitely agree with this topic. Yesterday, I saw 4 post in a row, same poster, same question...0 replies. Stop posting multiple threads on the same topic and GOOGLE!
Guest shokka9 Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 you cant flame common sense. :) When i got my Omnia...i registered to a lot of sites. I read and read, and READ then READ some more...it took me 2/3 months of reading beofre i posted anything, and i didnt post to ask, i posted to help. If this is something new to you, then research it, spend time getting to know it..Dont think you can jump in two feet first and know everything, or open your own thread because you are too lazy to read. It is frustrating to see the same questions for 12 months.....time and time again. Like my man says, these arent generally Omnia issues, but WinMo issues..Google is EVERYBODIES friend and can help at all times.. It helps me everyday. It saves posting something usually also. Just please, guys, read and learn. It works...then maybe you can help others too.
Guest GodsGift Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Well said guys. We were all noobs once, but noobs with common sense. Never panic, always google, then ask.... GG
Guest Tim-H Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 +1 I'm pretty tolerant of seeing new posts with the same question but its out of control lately. Seeing the same questions in new threads at least 3 or 4 times a week now.
Guest GodsGift Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Actually, without being pedantic ... necosino, why is not searching and not using common sense being illiterate? Just playing devils advocate .. :) GG
Guest shokka9 Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 also, you will get the same guy, post exactly (word for word) multiple times in random threads, and create 2/3 same topics in the main forum... I even get pm's from these lazy people. I am an admin samsung-omnia.org and we have a rules thread, but not everybody reads it.. It helps a little to stem the stupid topics and posts arising, but nothing stops these people
Guest bluetooth_decay Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 (edited) Valid points all. But there's a flip side. I just got an Omnia i910. I kinda dreaded getting another WinMo phone, as they absolutely need customization (doesn't anyone at Microsoft have a cell phone?). But on Verizon it's either that or Blackberry, which allows comparatively little customization, so I picked my poison. I spent untold hours reading online how to tweak my last phone, and like Shokka, didn't do much talking. I can tell you though, a good 50% of that time would have been saved if people could resist threadjacking. After spending hours wading to 40, 50 forum pages of posts -- and multiply that by the 50 or so Google hits you might get on a topic -- one ends up weary and susceptible to just starting another thread. Many of those threads could be 10-20% of their actual size, had folks just stayed on topic. I find myself in the same boat now with this Omnia. So far I've resisted asking any questions. But I don't know how long my resolve will last. Edited July 24, 2009 by bluetooth_decay
Guest TheDrizzle Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Seriously, if I see one more thread about GPS NOT WORKING IN NEW VERIZON UPDATE I'm going to shoot somebody

But I don't know how long my resolve will last. Inside each thread, there is a search button on the bottom-left. Simply type the word of what you're looking for in the thread there, and you will find it.. As for google, give me a topic, and I can guarantee you an answer within 3 clicks of a google search.

Guest meabigbaldguy Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 Who else here isn't also fed up with these ones? "Which ROM version to use?" "How to update my Omnia?" "Which GPS works best?" "How to change from Win 6.1 to 6.5?"
Guest buddybear Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 I have had this same complaint about technical support for years. When I call for support, I have already exhausted all of my resources. It is so anoying when you call for tech support and the guy just reads the book to you. I do not need someone to read to me the book I have just read...DUH! You have hit the nail on the head why so many companies have outsourced their support to foreign companies that hire people to read scripts. So many people these days do not want to read, they just want someone to read to them. OK I'll get off the soap box now...
Guest necosino Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 I'm very pleased with the positive response from this thread. Hopefully people will read this and take it to heart :)
Guest Alex (nedge2k) Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 just remember, you were all new once. not everyone has the time nor the inclination to read through pages and pages of threads to get the answer to a simple question. yes, it's annoying but instead of just telling people to rtfm or use the search, give them the answer and educate them in the process.
