Hardware buttons during a call

Back on the stock ROM, I was able to change the volume, and sometimes even end the call, while the screen was off during a call. Now, once the screen goes off, I need to turn it back on to just change the volume.

Think of this:"What did you say?", presses volume up button, nothing, "One minute", turns screen on, turns volume up, turns screen off so I don't pres any buttons by accident, "OK, I'm back."

So my question--Is there any way around this? Making it so that during a call, even if the screen is off, I can end the call, or change the volume without bothering to take the phone from my ear, turn the volume up/down, turn the screen off, and bring it back to my ear? I don't want to sound lazy, just it's so annoying pressing the volume up button repeatedly without ever being more able to hear what the other person is saying.
