Guest Mistar Muffin Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 (edited) I bought myself and my wife matching i910's 2 weeks ago. First thing I did was to flash the newly released CF03. I then installed Google Maps and enabled GPS. I remembered everyone else mentioning that it found them "Within X meters" almost immediately. All mine and my wife's would say is "Your current location is temporarily unavailable". Outside I could get a GPS lock within a few minutes. I thought nothing of this until some friends of ours got matching Omnia's for themselves because they liked ours so much. I did the same procedure. I did the CF03 update and installed Google Maps. On theirs, both immediately said "Your location within 1900 meters" and it was VERY close. I went through every possibly setting, I did hard resets on all 4 phones to be sure and went through the same steps. Even did *228 options 1 and 2 on all 4 phones. I even reflashed the CF03 onto my phone and my wife's. Nada, same result. I cleared and reset Google Maps settings from within the program, nuthin. Obviously I would like to have the my location feature as it makes it super convenient to search around you without entering an address. The my location feature is accurate enough to find all the McDonald's or movie theaters around you, and thats why I want it to work. From what I understand, Google's my location is not triangulation but rather it gets some very basic location data that is being broadcast from the tower. ALL I can think of is that my wife and I are recently ported over from the Alltel merger that was finalized last month and that this may have something to do with it. Obviously, our phones are having trouble getting this information from the tower, while my friends who have always had Verizon work just fine. Can anyone think of anything else I may have missed or something to try before I go to Verizon? I don't want to even bother with them because I know the chances of getting someone in tech support who can actually help. Edited August 10, 2009 by Mistar Muffin
Guest ScreamingFalcon Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 My recommendation is to try Bing's GPS system and see if it can find you indoors. GPS is very sensitive to building construction though, so, I can't make any guarantees that even Bing will work.
Guest Raul6 Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 i think if you ask it to use gps that is what it does and fails indoors. without specifying gps google will fall back to closest tower trick
Guest Mistar Muffin Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 i think if you ask it to use gps that is what it does and fails indoors. without specifying gps google will fall back to closest tower trick GPS works for both BING and Google Maps....however....a lock almost always takes a few minutes and NEVER works indoors. The closet tower trick "My Location" as google calls it is immediate on my friend's phones and I would like to use that by default and just enable GPS when I need it for navigation.
