Direct Push?

I'm sort of confused. I was looking into enabling Direct Push for my e-mail, but I'm not exactly sure what Direct Push is! Is it when you receive an e-mail, it's pushed to your phone, or what? Also how do enable it so that my e-mail is automatically pushed to my phone?
