Connecting SPV to Laptop

Hi

I have successfully connected my SPV via the Infrared port to my laptop and have beamed across various amounts of data.

However I want to be able to browse the internet / check email on my laptop using the SPV Infrared and GPRS. So far I cannot seem to get this working, I’m sure the error is on the part of the settings on my laptop.

When I have the connection established and try to browse I am presented with a dial up screen which will after trying to connect says "could not establish a connection"

Does anyone know of an Internet resource for instructions on making this type of connection. The Orange manual basically explains how to turn on Modem Link.

You can browse the net on a laptop using IR. The following is for XP:

On your phone, go to Prgrams > More > More > Accessories.  

Select IRComm and Menu > Activate.

Align the infrared port with that on your PC, the PC should recognise the connection as Standard modem over infrared. It will install the drivers forthe device.

Once installed, go to Start > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options. Select Standard modem over infrared and click Properties. Go to the advanced screen, and enter the following initialisation string:  

+cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet","",0,0

Then, go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Create a new connection.

Create a new connection, connect it through Standard modem over infrared, and put the phone number in as "*99#".

Dial the number and bam!

If this does not work, call 156 and ask for Second Line Support.

I have completed the steps above and there does seem to be a certain amount of communication between the devices, however I still get a couple of error messages along the lines of

"There is no dial tone"

or

"There is an error communicating with the device"

I called Orange customer services and the assistant talked me trough the methods of setting the connection, however he did suggest adding (at) before the + in the string. But still no connection.

On sending information to the phone from the laptop this is working ok as I sent a wav file and this appeared in the temp folder on the SPV.

So if anyone can help further I would be most grateful.

It only seems to be working on certain versions of Windows.

People have told me it works on Me, but .

Orange Second Line Support are the people I can recommend to resolve this...

Right, having just got this IR modem link working (i am currently typing this reply using my SPV connected to my dads lappy via IR) i hope i can help people by telling them how i did it.

I used the instructions as described above, and like theplayer, i got the same error - "There is an error communicating with the device".

After lots of attempts i finally decided to delete the initialisation string from the advanced section of modem properties. Lo and behold i connected first time and have now been connected for over 15 minutes at a fairly decent speed.

On a side note, i also got the error that said "There is no dial tone"

but i believe this is due to the IR timing out on the phone and shutting down, as it seems to do if it is inactive for a period of time.

The OS i am using is windows xp home, and like i said i'm using no initialisation commands whatsoever.

I know how frustrating it can be in setting up the GPRS Settings, especially when in another country as i found out on a trip to spain last year. Orange advised me that all was the same worldwide but that wasnt the case. After lengthly phone calls to orange from spain (which didn't sort the problem) i got the settings from the net and they worked.

Here is the worldwide list. I don't think a password and extra strings are required to connect, but i found that turning off header compression helped in connecting.

ive got my spv working with my laptop over IR on ME - works pretty fast aswel.

just wanted to make sure that im connecting through my gprs package?

if any1's wondering, i installed a standard modem driver, connected through IR port then used the XP settings in the 2nd post above
