Guest dwallersv Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 There are a bunch of features missing from Voicecommand on the Omnia that were there on my now-quite-old Treo -- announcing CallerID, appointments, and a bunch of other things that are really convenient when driving. Anyone know if the "better" voicecommand is out there somewhere, and does it work on the Omnia?
Guest kcmtnbiker Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 Yea, I really miss the IBM ViaVoice that was on my old iPaq from 2002. That would actually read my email to me and was very convenient to catch up on email on my way home.

Anyone know if the "better" voicecommand is out there somewhere, and does it work on the Omnia? I also had the Treo, and it had the same MS Voice Command that's found on the Omnia. (In fact, I think the Treo only had v 1.5 whereas the Omnia has 1.6...) All of the features you mentioned are available, but likely not enabled. Just go to Settings / Personal / Voice Command and check the boxes as desired. You'll also find additional choices for most of the categories by highlighting the category and then clicking 'Options'. That said, I have noticed that the main 'Enabled' checkbox for Voice Command seems to be cleared randomly on the Omnia so VC stops working. I can't find a pattern to reproduce it, but whenever the announcements aren't being heard, I usually find that to be the cause. Also, the 'Announce Caller ID' function is almost useless - even if volume is all the way up you can't hear the announcement, and it's made even worse because the phone starts ringing at the same time. My wife has a cheap Motorola phone that does a far better job - the caller name is announced first (very loud and clear!), and then the phone begins to ring. (Why is it that the volume level, sound quality and speakerphones in basic free phonea are always so much better than in an expensive smartphones like the Omnia? Mine sounds weak and tinny, and you can barely hear it even with the volume turned up fully. I know there are tweaks to increase the max volume, but not sure how useful they'd be because the tiny speaker already distorts and buzzes even at the max factory levels.)

DOH! That was it. I forgot that each item had its own options. Never mind :)

It's possible that other carriers might choose not to include it? So you have two choices: You can buy it from Microsoft through its distributors for $40. :) Or you can just do a quick search on this forum and find it available for free download in many different threads. :) To save you some time, here's a very good one - the Original Samsung Application Repository, where you'll find it close to the top of the very first post. This thread is also a great place to find any other Samsung apps that you might need.

Guest AkWngnut Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 Ok so I installed the program, cant seem to find where the program *.exe is to run it. I did however notice if you went to buttons and were to bind the voice command to something it would work. Do you have to set it up to make it do the functions that you want? I tried voice dialing and nothing happened. Thanks again. Oh anyone know where a PDF manual can be found? -AkWingnut

I am so sorry last night when I installed it I could not find the settings that we were talking about, but just a few minutes ago I checked and it was in the settings where you said it could be found. I just need to figure out how to work it. Can you get it to voice dial for you? Thanks again for your help today.
