Guest Psykomanta Brain Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 Hello everyone, first post here :) I was just wondering if anyone knows of a tool to control the omnia's backlight... I like to read my eBooks at night... and I find that the Omnia's screen can be way too bright for reading in the dark... I wanted to turn the screen brightness down... if possible down to the 'dim' level which the backlight assumes when the device isn't touched for a few seconds... If there was an app that could 'hold' the dimmed setting even when the device is being used, it would be perfect... Cheers
Guest Darren XVI Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 (edited) I'm sure WkTask has a backlight dimming/brightning feature. I just remember when I went on a flight I used it to turn the backlight right off. You could try that, it has a bar like a volume bar where you can pick which level of brightness you want. Unfortunately WkTask doesn't work with WM 6.5.1 due to the newly reduced task bar size :) Good idea though!!!

I just remember when I went on a flight I used it to turn the backlight right off. You could try that, it has a bar like a volume bar where you can pick which level of brightness you want. I was going to suggest WkTask as well. The display brightness control needs to be in manual mode (Settings->System->Backlight). When the WkTask brightness control is set with the bottom increment illuminated, you get the standard Omnia minimum brightness. Turn off that last segment, and the display goes almost completely dark -- there is a very very dim bit of backlight, easily viewed in the dark, but very hard to see at all in normal room lighting. Which makes it hard to turn the light back on. This setting persists across soft resets, so be careful. If you turn the display down to this dim level, and can't blindly feel your way back to turning it up during daylight, you'll have to go in a dark room/closet to see it and get it back. Great solution, though. I use it all the time, and don't bother with the auto light sensor.
Guest metalmanicman Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Which EBook reader do you use Psykomanta ? I recommend using Mobipocket (It's Freeware). It reads .txt or .html. Adjustable fonts and font size. Changeable colours (black background, Light-Grey text. Perfect for dim light) Fullscreen Also the Burgomeister has HEAPS of great books to "borrow".
Guest Pako777 Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 use my mod driver - zylonite_backlight.dll... only you need writes certificates for simple copyng to windows ... if not - this dll need integrated in firmware with help kitchenzylonite_backlight_PUIC2.zip

Guest Dustinb Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 (edited) You can use a program called "candlelight" to turn the backlight off through a program link in the start menu. I use it all the time with there latest ROM's and it's a simple Cab install. But I'm unsure of where I originally downloaded it so I guess I'm no help. Edited September 8, 2009 by Dustinb
Guest SilverPony2001 Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 Under settings, system, power -> Battery Power tab, change "Turn off backlight if device is not used for" to 10 second, then UNCHECK "Turn on backlight when a button is pressed or the screen is tapped. Either wait 10 seconds, or hold down the end key to lock the phone and shutoff the backlight. It shouldn't turn back on now.

Guest mmaster12 Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 I'm an idiot for not making a backup copy..Simple delete this zylonite_backlight file from you PPC (use file manager as Resco Explorer). Soft reset. And old driver will come back.
Guest ivanxxx Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 Simple delete this zylonite_backlight file from you PPC (use file manager as Resco Explorer). Soft reset. And old driver will come back. thank you very much for your answer mmaster12, a moment ago I've tried that with resco explorer but it denied to delete the dll file. "cannot delete ..., access denied" After that I tried to change "proporties" of dll like unthicking the "system" or "hidden" boxes but it did not applied to file. So how can I force to delete the dll file ???
Guest new2city Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 The only working way that I found was to toggle off and on ALCMode(Automatic light Control mode???) it is in ther registry \HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\ALCMode if you set it to 0, the screen will go very dark, but still ok in the dark if you set it to 1, it will go back to normal.. no softreset required.. hope this helps..

Guest Ste-V-illage Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 i overwrote the original one with pako's, after restarting my fone backlight was at the max level even i set manual to lowest. cannot change the light level any more. so i get back to the ROM's one. pako777 is it that I did wrong way?
Guest NilsE Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 thank you very much for your answer mmaster12, a moment ago I've tried that with resco explorer but it denied to delete the dll file. Sometimes it won't let you delete it when it is in use so just rename the file with resco (add something like xxx to the end) then soft reset and then you can go back and delete the renamed one.
Guest ivanxxx Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 Thank you NilsE and Pako777 for your answers, I've coped with the problem but I dont know how I did it exactly, I've tried to delete it with resco as I said before and it poped-up an error but somehow, it did manage to delete it, after I tried some "unthicking" and reset the phone for some reason, it turned back to all normal. And yes, it has a check on "ROM" box too.. Thank you at all. After this experience, I should say that this modified .dll is not stable on wm6.5 sector rom
Guest pylesw Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 The only working way that I found was to toggle off and on ALCMode(Automatic light Control mode???) it is in ther registry \HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\ALCMode if you set it to 0, the screen will go very dark, but still ok in the dark if you set it to 1, it will go back to normal.. no softreset required.. hope this helps.. Setting ALCMode to 0 by itself only puts the backlight in Manual mode. You still need to set the Brightness registry value to 0 to turn the Backlight to it's minimal setting: \HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\Brightness I typically create a reg file with both registry values in it. When I want to turn off the backlight, I simply double click on the reg file.
Guest jbr05ki Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Thanks! This worked for me. Either wait 10 seconds, or hold down the end key to lock the phone and shutoff the backlight. It shouldn't turn back on now.

You simply rewrite dll - so will not work.. The driver will not be loaded. It is necessary to sign it the certificate and this certificate together with dll to write down in phone... or.. Using kitchen to integrate dll into an firmware, to collect it, to flashing in the device Edited September 11, 2009 by Pako777
Guest Pako777 Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 After this experience, I should say that this modified .dll is not stable on wm6.5 sector rom You are wrong... dll works on WM6.5 only it is necessary to establish correctly
