Guest Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Hi Guys, I've got a quick question about apps2sd in the new ROM, am I correct in thinking that an SD in my Hero with 2 partitions, one in EXT3 and one in FAT32 is all that's required for my apps to run from the SD card? Presumably I install apps in the normal fashion and then they are automatically transferred when I reboot the phone? Or am I missing something? Is there an easy way to check that the apps have been moved across and that everything's running correctly without getting into command lines and whatnot? Sorry to be joining up and immediately asking questions. Thanks!

Guest Chatt76 Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 OOPS. I suppose checking the available system memory might have tipped me off... Sorry! I have exactly same question! I have manually partitioned my 8GB SD card... so what now?
Guest francisbacon Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 how about if we want to uninstall an app ... do we just do it normally from the phone .. or do we now have to also manually uninstall from the partition. also when i partitioned my sd card .. flashrec, cm-hero-recovery.img & backup-recovery.img were gone .. is it ok that they are not my my SD card anymore? i did copy those files to my pc before i did the partition but is it ok they are not in my SD Card .. once the phone is rooted i guess those left over files can be deleted right?
Guest Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 Right, having the partition is all that's required, apps install from then on. Apps ALREADY installed move over when you restart. I think. I've got 126MB free right now with loads of things running. I believe it was around 140MB at boot. Have a look at your partition to see how much is used perhaps too (by computer, not sure how/if you can do it via the phone itself). Hope that's helpful.

I am installing apps but when I check my Memory it is getting smaller each time. Now round about 100mb. I have partitioned my sd with ext 3 (512mb) but I think new apps are not installing on sd. How can I find out if my apps are installed on sd? Maybe there are other things using the memory of the hero...? Should I have to install apps2sd software from market? I did it to try but I don´t know what is happening when I use the features with it... How can I put my already installed apps on hero to sd? I looked up with my linux/ ubuntu pc if there is any partition like ext 3 and indeed there is a ext 3 with some app folders but why I cannot see the "disk space 512mb" in my settings menu? Guest TheManGyBear Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 <_< Sad to say, I'm a noob to the scene too. But I do have an explanation and an answer. Although the apps2sd will automatically kick in once you partition your SD and install a custom rom, part of your internal memory will still be taken when you install a new program. It's sort of like a kernal for the program. Note the initial amount of internal memory you have then try downloading and installing several large large program. If apps2sd is not doing its job, you'd see a huge decline in your internal memory i.e. you downloaded 5mb, your internal memory will be reduced by 4-5mb. If you notice a minor decline, then you're safe. So don't worry about the minor decrease as it might be a must for the program to work. I've not found out what the Delvik thingie is for but time will tell.
Guest kendon Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 your effort in all honors, but this thread was buried a long time ago... <_< your explanation was spot on nevertheless. dalvik is the virtual machine that executes the code of the app, you can compare it to the java vm, or maybe even the .net framework (not really correct, but maybe eases the imagination if you know what i mean  ). keep on reading, you are on the right track!
Guest Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Don't bump this and expose my know-nothing persona of 6 months ago! I'm now a know-little, don't you know!
