How to get PUSH-style mail on Omnia!

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Update: Google now supports sync. Just setup activesync on your phone to sync with m.google.com and you're set!

So, i signed up for Google voice, cancelled my carriers txt package, and use google voice sms exclusively. However, on Windows Mobile phones, if you cancel your txt package, there is no way to get instant notification of email. Which puts a stick in my spoke, because i use the gmail forward feature with GV SMS. Without instant notify of a new sms, its hard to respond in a timely manner to these messages!

Thats where PUSH comes into play. Push still strikes me as an 'iphone feature' because of the coined term 'push mail'. Really, 'push' is just a term for emails being 'pushed' at the time they arrive. Apposed to constantly polling your email account for messages at a set interval. (every 5 minutes lol...) Push for WM so far has been only a top dollar feature. Meaning the only real way to get messages 'as they arrive' on your phone, is if you have a workplace server, or a home server running an Exchange server role.

So i spent a couple days trying to find another way to get messages on my phone in less than a 5 minute interval.

Emoze is the first thing i found to work. Though, the second day of using it, without a reboot, it stopped getting messages. Im not sure why. Another thing i noticed, which is probably more of a ROM bug, is that in Titanium, under email, i have 'gmail gmail1 gmail2, and Google Mail. I think this is because i have tried a few push solutions, and created a few different mail accounts, and deleting them. Somehow they still show under the Titanium 'email' section. I'll try to hard reset i guess. This may be why Emoze is not correctly getting emails.

SEVEN Is another working solution. I have yet to try, but i think i will hard reset and give it a go.

If anybody else is interested in testing these. Please, post your results!

Here are some push solutions that my or may not work for you, i've tried em all but none seemed to work for me. Feel free to try.

1 Emansio This is a 3rd party app that is supposed to integrate with Pocket outlook. I was unable to get this one working.

2 Mobipush. (web based) The second attempt i made was with this is a web based service (free) in which you enter your email credentials into your "account" then you enter the mobipush address into your exchange server via active sync. Then it is supposed to sync email via exchange push. However i was unable to get this working successfully, activesync gave me error code 0X80072FD and i was unable to find any support info so i chalked it up to broken for me. I urge anyone to try and report if functioning.

3 EmailScheduler (APP) As mentioned by Unclebeer'. This app let me get into the vital settings section once, then giving me an app error everytime after that. So i gave up on this one.

4 IMAP-pusher service (APP) Sounded promising, doesnt give any fatal errors. However, it just didnt seem to work on my phone. Once, it retreived my emails, but only once. And having no status monitor, only a log. Is kinda hard to tell if it is IMAP-idle or just plain not working.

Here are a few more i did not try.

Nuevasync (WEB) This is a commercial solution, NOT FREE

Mail2Web (WEB) Again, not free, although the article i read said that the live version was free to try, but it may have been old.

Microsoft Windows Mobile

Microsoft began offering a simulated push experience with Windows Mobile 2003, and true push technology in 2007 with the release of Windows Mobile 5 AKU2[5] under the name "Direct Push Technology". 'Direct Push' technology is an additional feature added to Microsoft Exchange 2003 with service pack 2 that adds messaging and security features. Exchange Server enabled to push Outlook messaging directly to a phone device running Windows Mobile 5, using a subscriber's existing wireless phone account (instead of the device having to "pull" e-mail from the server). To achieve push mail with e-mail providers other than Exchange, there is a plug-in from Emansio that enables push mail with almost any e-mail provider, e.g. Gmail, AOL etc. Additionally, a free, open-source, executable has been developed to take advantage of the IMAP-IDLE command.

Well i tried the emansio application, and it does not work. Says i'm roaming when i'm home...there is another app called emoze but i think i'll pass on that one. What is this IMAP-IDLE stuff?

don't give up.

I use SEVEN. It's pretty good, although it does use battery life. Put it this way, I am running pointui 2.1 + SEVEN + Palringo all the time and I get about 18 hrs a day. Therefore I need to charge every night.

Anyhow, SEVEN, is a third party company and you are basically trusting them with your information. As bad as this may sound, they are a bigger corporation with seemingly good ethics. I've been using SEVEN for a couple of months and while there have been some issues along the way its been 95 percent satisfaction.

I would also like to point out that since I have a google voice number, I no long have need for a text messaging plan (not like i ever did), but no I have complete free texting because the GV SMS gets forwarded to my gmail and then my gmail gets pushed to my phone via SEVEN. I usually receive a text around a minute of it being sent. Pretty darn good if you ask me. Also, this is probably why my battery has been dying a little quicker (A LITTLE, maybe about an hour sooner - with the sheer amount of texts and texting i do via email client).

I was lucky enough that my school uses an exchange server for their e-mail. So I just setup gmail to forward to this address, and setup push from there. If you really want a nice push experience, try finding an e-mail account with exchange server support (usually you have to pay for it). Then just forward your previous e-mails to them and go from there.

Yea, i tried mobipush, which is a forwarder for your email accounts, that act as an exchange server. You enter your email creds into mobipush, then you setup your sync to sync.mobipush.com but it wasnt working for me when i tried it, not sure why.

I have a copy of windows server 2008 R2. Would it be possible to setup an exchange server in a virtual environment to forward my emails to? I have a dynamic IP but using dyndns or something, would it be possible?

SEVEN is a java application?

I have been trying the emansio outlook plug in but it just doesnt want to work properly. The R1 version gives me "Socket read strange" Whatever that means... And the R2 fails to recognize my email accounts in outlook. Giving a profile error, suggesting i create an email profile.

Also, i notice emansio defaults to port 993, and 465 for gmail... Isnt the correct incoming/outgoing 995/465?

I sure wish more people would try to get push function on their omnia..

I must look for a new solution to push email via Gmail almost every week in the hope someone, somewhere has created a good app. It really needs a service on the phone that can handle the imap process. Gudensoft project did seem to be heading in the right direction but I think he has canned the development for Radar Love.....www.gudensoft.com if anyone wants to try and report back

I dont understand why google dont just open up the activsync side to email, they go calendar and contacts!!!

I tried that one just a minute ago actually. It seemed to work for a second, then completely stop receiving all mail. It also gives me a funny NETCF35.messages. error.

Im about to install server 08 and setup my own exchange server lol :) That or buy an iphone :)

The gudensoft email scheduler gives me an error and crashes when i switch to the settings tab but that might be the 6.5 rom im using

LOL...

wait, did no one in here really consider what i just told everyone?

Get SEVEN. It's an actual email and calender client that attaches itself to your mobile outlook, but is still a separate application by all accounts that freaken pushes everything. wow people, wow.

Furthermore, SEVEN is not a java app.

Here I even got the link for anyone that is google inept:

http://preview.seven.com/get/client/select...amp;posted=true

Try it out.

I got it to work! Emoze actually works, it has a terrific, intuitive interface, and its free!

I tried seven, but was shooed away when i saw they didnt have omnia on the phone list. I guess i forgot to try a 'winmo' phone :) I appreciate the help though. I might try Seven just to compare it to emoze.

I use windows live for my push email. Created a new windows live account and set up mail forwardwarding on my primary account to my live address. set windows live email sync schedule to "as item arrives" and instant push email with something built into your WM phone.

Get SEVEN.

Friends who use Seven tell me the servers go down quite regularly. Not ideal.

does it ever crash, go offline or just seem to stop receiving email?

No crashes since his last update. Also, the status icon showss when IDLE has stopped (lost coverage, or whatever).

your friends are wrong. Yes, I am being this blunt.

First, I know that my word is not golden, because you don't know me. However, as a fellow Omnian, that comes to this board regularly, why not try my advice and just give it a try? I mean, your trying everything else. In addition, I have tried emoze, and other email schedulers (because that's what they really are) and while I like emoze, it is more of a battery hog then the others. The user interface for Emoze is better, but that all seems moot when you seldom need to go to it because you are still checking your emial in your outlook inbox. (Plus, you might get bugs with Emoze, like I did. One in particular was the constant reminder of emails in my inbox. The other was that it worked only half the time... I hope Emoze does work better for you though...) If in fact you are having great success with Emoze could you post the cab you are using?

Anyhow, I'm done advocating SEVEN. Even though I'd like to see more people with the Omnia use it, just so that SEVEN would continue to optimize for us.

WHy not use the client that comes with WM6.5?

I have Yahoo, Gmail, Local ISP email and my domain email on my phone...

^ I am using the 6.5 mail client. I am trying to find another option other than polling gmail every 5 minutes for mail messages. Also, the windows live solution wont work for us Google voice SMS users. You cant reply via email to a google voice notification forwarded from your gmail account to a live mail account.

Using emoze, seems to prolong battery live, apposed to the 'every 5 minute' option.

Why you say emoze is just a scheduler? it seems to be working as a non polling solution. Sorry to ask, but is SEVEN free?

If you want to try the Emoze cab i am using, just click the link in my OP. Select HTC touch pro, or diamond. Any Winmo cab should all be the same.

No, sorry, I guess I wasn't clear in my post. I know that Emoze isn't a scheduler, I was reffering to the actual IMAP IDLER's out there. I was just saying that I tried everything out there (free) for email which included Emoze and all the other clients (which are schedulers).

Seven is free, but it is in beta. I was unaware that a new version of Emoze was released for 6.5. Great news. Hope to hear more from you as you use it further. Please report any bugs/ great or not so great experiences. I am open to change. How long is your battery life per day?

Posted

Still checking battery drain, but i'll just say that my battery meter (batti) hasnt stayed at a full charge this long with this phone, ever. Could be that im not constantly checking to see if i have new messages, i can just listen to it notify. Going on a few hours at full charge. Im sure this is alot easier on the battery than having it check every 5 minutes, all the time. 12 times per hour. Thats 288 checks per day. Rather than not checking it 288 times/day, it would have to be less a drain for mr. batt.

So far so good. As in better than before :)

Posted (edited)

well i've tried Emoze again. It seems to work nicely. Hoewver, the notification system is missing something. It doesn't vibrate when a new email comes in, even though I have it on vibrate. Also the sound itself doesn't come up properly. In addition, I feel as though it doesn't push as quickly as SEVEN. However, it might be more batter efficient. I will continue to test. I would love it if other could test as well between Emoze and SEVEN, since they are both the best push solutions for Windows Mobile atm.

Edit

I have reinstalled SEVEN and I can say for certain that SEVEN pushes faster, with better notification than Emoze. I will test more on the battery issue within the next several days.

On a side note: Is it me, or does Emoze only get its notification when I put the screen back on via power? Usually, after I finish using my phone, I hit the power button and I guess, in my case, it stalls Emoze from pushing as quickly. However, this does not happen in SEVEN.

BTW, gayflag, maybe you should edit thread name to something like EMOZE or PUSH; which is the better PUSH Email service - help test.
