can't connect to my wifi network

Hi,

I have just got a Hero through Orange. Very nice it seems too. However I can't make it join my wifi network, which is running WPA Personal security through a Linksys router. I've tried rebooting the rooter, changing the channel, double-treble-checking the passcode. No dice! The phone just sits on ''obtaining IP address" for ages then fails.

Any ideas? This happened with the default firmware but I've since upgraded to the modaco one and that has the same issue.

I've also tried disabling security altogether now, same result. I've managed to connect all sorts of things to this router in the past, I'm sure the phone's causing this trouble. Any ideas at all?

85 views and not a single idea? Ouch. Everyone else just got their wifi running out of the box with no hassle or what? At least it'd be nice to know if anyone out there is running it on a Linksys WRT54GSv6 so I could rule that out. Let me know!

(I tried giving the Hero a static IP, it still fails out with the obtaining IP address thing)

Got mine running out of the box. No idea what router I'm using but if I was you, I'd try connecting something else to my wireless see if that works (then you can rule your router out). Then try connecting to your phone to another wireless network, if that fails then you know its a phone issue. If it works then it's compatibility issues between your router and your phone in which case I don't know enough to try and help you.

Cheers, mmusaji. I have a Wii, a Windows 7 netbook and I did have a netbook running several versions of Ubuntu Linux all connecting fine to the same router over wifi. I'm hoping to get a chance to try the phone on other wifi networks this weekend.

got my running on a linksys router... but the hero couldn't find the network with wpa2 personal. i had to use wpa.

actually, i don't know, if it got better with the new rom update, but in the beginning, heros had problems with some routers.

edit:

i just set security to wpa2 personal, and the hero couldn't find the network...

Not using one of these myself, but I know of several users with WRT54G/GL models who can connect with a Hero. One thing - make sure you're running current firmware as at least one user reported a firmware update solving connection issues.

Hm. I definitely have the latest official firmware on it. I've seen people mention "Tomato" custom firmware for Linksys routers too, sadly that doesn't work on my particular version! I guess I'm about done for then! Not getting much help from HTC or Linksys so far.

Last thing I got from HTC was "check mobile networks, Access points on teh device and set them to type "default"."

I'm not even sure what this is! I have two in there, which are presumably default as I've not touched them: Orange Internet and Orange MMS. I have no idea how/why this would effect wifi anyway, or if I need to do something else to them.

Startling update! I just successfully connected it to a Netgear WGR614 that I borrowed. So I guess that's good, although it conveniently leaves me in a place where HTC can say "it works on that, your router is at fault" while Linksys can say "everything else connects fine? then your phone is at fault" and neither of them actually help.

And me contemplating buying a new router just so I can surf the net on my phone without getting the netbook out. Perhaps a silly thing to do.
