Guest justpratik Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 (edited) Seems Omnia i900 users are in luck. A customer who contacted Samsung Netherlands got the following reply when he asked about the Windows Mobile 6.5 update. In your email you ask the question if windows mobile 6.5 will be released for the Omnia. We can confirm that this is coming, however the exact release date isn’t known yet, we therefore advice you to keep an eye on www.samsungmobile.com. This acknowledgement is a bit surprising because the general trend among handset manufacturers is to limit support for older handsets so that users upgrade to a latest one but this looks to be a good move to extend the original Omnia’s longevity. There’s no word on the firmware price too but I guess it won’t be paid one. Owners of the Samsung Omnia i900 seem set to receive an update of Windows Mobile 6.5 for their devices, although there is no word on an exact release date just yet. While many newer handsets have already rolled out since the Omnia made its debut, the Windows Mobile 6.5 update might just prolong its shelf life for a little bit longer, while putting off the purchase of phones from other companies for existing Samsung Omnia owners. Yeh I've read the email myself as I'm Dutch so I asked exactly the same question to the same department and got a different answer from them then this guy so don't get your hopes too high :) but well yeh you never know... They probably read the question too fast and thought it was about the new Omnia II. When you go the specific dutch page it already says you can upgrade to 6.5 when you have Omnia II and you can subscribe there to be notified first for when it's finally out. Dunno if you all noticed but all the new phones that come out with Windows Mobile 6.5 have the startbutton up while all the new releases we have here have the button down... Guest Zealster Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 That's because we have later builds than will be released. Our builds are pretty much WinMo 6.5.1 and continuations to WinMo 7 I guess.

Yeh that's exactly what I think aswell... pre wm7 builds, MS did the same thing with Windows 7 in the begin phase and looked almost identical to Vista.
Guest kav Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 i wrote an email to samsung singapore to ask tehm about the win mo 6.5 update for the omnia and if it was considered an outdated fone.. their reply was that at the moment only the management staffs know abt any upgrade offers to the omnia i900, but it is definitely sure as of yet, samsung is not and will not be part of the launchers of future win mo7. I have read that HTC and Acer have already taken up with microsoft to build phones that can tackle win mo 7 as it is a rather demanding os in terms of processing power and memory. samsung didnt take up any offers with microsoft, even considering it is among the worlds biggest manufacturers of fones and that it has just recently started with win mo systems. could it be that samsung is probably thinking that this partnership with microsoft for win mo fones was a mistake?? their biggest hit after the omnia i900 was the omnia HD and it is running sysbian OS. could it be that it is more profitable to make fones with sysbian OS?

In North America: Mobile operators AT&T, Bell Mobility, Sprint, TELUS and Verizon Wireless, and phone manufacturers HP, HTC Corp., LG Electronics, Samsung and Toshiba Corp. · In Europe: Mobile operators Orange, Deutsche Telekom AG and Vodafone Group Plc, and phone manufacturers Acer, HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba · In Latin America: Mobile operator TIM Brazil, and phone manufacturers HTC, LG Electronics and Samsung · In Asia Pacific: Mobile operators NTT DOCOMO Inc., SOFTBANK Mobile Corp., SK Telecom, Telstra and WILLCOM Inc., and phone manufacturers Acer Inc., HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba

Guest kav Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 I also read the news on Engadget.com web site and in the news though they have mentioned entire omnia range but in the models list they i900 is not listed. If i remember good, Samsung uses the Omnia as a name to denominated all its devices running win mo.. this is why it changed the name of the previously called Omni HD to i8910 HD. in omnia "category" there is the omnia i900, omnia pro, omnia lite, omnia II etc...
Guest dutchphoto Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 I doubt this. Samsung also likes you to buy the Omnia II. It is official if a press release has published about this. And yeah maybe they are mistaken with the Omnia II
Guest badtrip Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 (edited) When omnia just started to be on the market everbody told us that samsung Omnia was totally capable of processing WM7. I also believe so but with some limitations.. Samsung should provide their omnia users that OS. If Samsung department says that omnia IS NOT capable of WM7 so it seems that we will go on using custom roms! Edited September 17, 2009 by badtrip
