antenna adapter versus repeater for improved reception?

I have noticed there are two approaches to improving cell reception - using an antenna adapter with external antenna that connects to the phone or using a repeater antenna (like this http://www.cellphoneshop.net/repeater.html). They sell for around the same ($15 or so). Just wondering if anyone has had luck with either. I mainly just want it while driving and so am leaning towards the repeater.

Just going on how the devices work, the antenna that directly connects should work better. Using something that doesn't require power (and is wireless) will only boost signal power minimally. The direct connect antenna (powered if there is one) should work much better. They basically do the same thing, but the connected one has a much better chance of working well, albeit more of a pain in the ass. Typical pros/cons of things of this nature. I've heard of use of direct connect antennas, and its been decent, while some people have had good results, others didn't have the device work. Its hit or miss overall.

Yeah, I am starting to rethink and go for an nactive solution. Something like this:

Perhaps the dual band one. Though I am hoping for a solution that doesn't have to connect to the phone.

yeah, the worst part is you need the battery cover off to connect the antenna, but this could be bypassed with a careful marking and drilling of the cover where the connector is. They seem cheap enough, so why not go ahead and try the non-connecting one first?
