Guest c0dehunter Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 Hello everyone, I have flashed my Omnia with ROM released on 10th (i think) september from Qbus, Kuanchai and someone else from Modaco. I have been using it now for one week and I really don't see why one would want to flash with unofficial ROM. Here are facts: - WM 6.5 isn't really much different from 6.1 - infact, everything ran smoother on old 6.1 - Unofficial ROMs seem like they are half way done - If you look at thread of QBus and Kuanchai you can see that like every 3 days there are new ROMs from SAME cooks. So what is point of my post? Which custom ROM would you suggest me for my needs: - screen lock - opera installed - no badword junk programs like IE and EverApp and other s*** you do not want - maybe a little more finger friendly UI in some menus (most of the time SPB Mobile Shell covers everything fine) ? Thanks
Guest Th3rmal Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 Everything ran smoother on 6.1 because 6.1 had been official for such a long time. 6.5 is still in beta (i think it still is, either that or it recently went official), hence new builds are coming out every few days with bug fixes/cosmetic fixes etc, hence why our dedicated cooks are able to make us new roms every couple of days. Its not their fault if their roms seem "half way done" because they can only work with what theyre given, and they do a damn good job of it. And you really gotta experiment to see whos roms you like best, personally, I like Ryzys roms.

Thanks I've tried a variety of different roms over the past 6 months, and at the moment I'm using one of Kuanchai 6.1 roms with the home2 pointSense theme which is working well for me. I think the main reason why people prefer custom roms is that most cooks get rid a lot of the unnecessary programs, and build in a couple of new ones. Like th3mal said, 6.5 is still under development and has a few little fixes that bring it up to scratch with more modern mobile OS's. There isn't a huge difference though...
Guest kdkinc Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 I use a Omnia i910 from Verizon... The official VZW rom is loaded with "bloatware"What does Shozu really do and who uses it?The cooks are able to in most cases make a faster and more efficient Roms.Checkout BlazingWolf or Bga7's Roms they seem to have the edge as far as the i910 roms go though several others are catching up with vast improvements.Todays rom's are yesterdays news. Besides change is always good...
Guest c0dehunter Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 Thanks guys for enlightening me.. I need to say though that I respect all cooks and I know they are working hard. I just expressed my frustrations although I have tried only 2 custom ROMs. Anyway, tonight I will flash with official ROM.
Guest Koofteh Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 The 'custom' cooked ROMs can be faster or slower than the latest Samsung ROM, depending on which ROM you flash and stuff like that. But I suggest you give a naked ROM a try, that is a ROM which has all the Samsung crapware stuff removed, but unlike most cooked ROMs nothing else has been added to it. It's basically a clean slate and you can add whatever you want, this is the best way of keeping your device speedy and running well. For the i900 I strongly suggest checking out DDDRKO's ROMs in the flashing section. Most of his releases are totally clean, or naked and quite nice to use. If you don't have to have the latest thing on your phone, install one of his ROMs with the old interface (Start and X buttons on top bar) and there should be very few bugs - I think 21857 is real good. :)
Guest brandogg Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 I can tell you right now, I'm running Hart's 23049 6.5 ROM, and it's WAAAAY faster than the official CF03 ROM.
Guest Kublikon Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 stick with the official rom... they are better for people like you
Guest Zealster Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 I used the official 6.1 firmware for the first 3-4 months I had my phone. There had been a dozen times I woke up to a frozen phone, or if I multi-tasked too much, it would freeze up. If I answered a call while in the middle of browsing or texting, there was a good possibility my phone was toast. I was about ready to give up and just buy a sensible phone, one that would be more reliable, and much more useful. But I decided that I could at least flash it if I was going to get a new phone to replace it anyways. So I did, and all that crap stopped. I started actually liking my phone, which was awesome and I'll never go back to an official 6.1 firmware. It's ugly, it contains useless crap and is designed for people who don't know how to flash their phones, or don't know that they can. You really have no idea what you're missing. With Ryrzy's 6.5 ROM I currently have about 7 days uptime with no freezes, minimal slowdowns (usually when 3-4 programs running, with PointUI & BlueOcean's PointSense running), and literally no problems at all. I'm able to rely on my phone for information, and actually use it the way it was advertised, and not with a crutch. I disagree, as Samsung put their ROM on there for a general audience.

Besides change is always good... shozu syncs to a photobucker, flickr, or other photo hosting account. when you take a picture, or series of pictures, when you exit the camera app shozu will automatically ask you if you want to post them. gosh darn handy, actually. when i was on my honeymoon i used it a lot, let the family keep up with us.
Guest 1968falconxt Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 i used the firmware 6.1 for a while. the phone froze up, it was not user friendly, hard to customise properly, poor touchscreen sensitivity, and was just horrible to use. i am now using shokkas 6.5. it has made the phone so much better. runs so much faster, touch response is great, it is user friendly, easy to customise, runs smoothly, never freezes up. I believe some custom ROMs are better than official ones because the chefs can add things and customise them to suit peoples needs, and make improvements over the official firmware
Guest sid0101 Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 ...wait what do you mean by "you people"...
Guest snapz54 Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 stick with the official rom... they are better for people like you +1 If you have to go through the trouble of posting and asking you aren't ready to handle this gift. And it IS A GIFT. These cooks turned my garbage crippled paperweight of a phone into an MP3 playing, Internet accessing, picture taking, weather showing, flashlight having, picture viewing, video watching, camcording, cutting edge software having, touch friendly UI running, Faster than superman being MACHINE that works when and if I need it ALWAYS. and it only gets better everytime I flash.

Well said, I was gonna do the same thing and was looking at getting an iphone but i thought id risk it and start flashing, now im addicted and flash to the latest rom by sector as they seem to be the best to work for me and he puts in everything that appeals to me from apps to the way it all looks. I bought my wife an iphone and my sister just got the i8910 and i still love and prefer my omnia running Winmo 6.5. Dont get me wrong the other phones are very good but i just love testing new roms as i get the feeling that i have a new phone and the thrill you get of waiting for the new rom to flash not knowing wether it will brick and then it resets and your excited and nervous to see if it all works. Flashing is scary at first but after a while you get confident and then you cant stop!!! Plus if you do brick your omnia you can buy a new phone for $400 australian if warranty doesnt cover it!! Cheers.

My Omnia does all that with its original (tweaked) firmware. It may not be faster than superman, but it is fast enough for me, has good battery life and never crashed or got frozen, except occasionally when I installed some software it didn't like. I would like to try a naked ROM to get rid of the bloatware, but I bought my phone off eBay without warranty (checking out WinMo for the first time, so I went for the cheapest option in case I didn't like it) and I don't fancy potentially having to fork out £200+ for a new phone when there is nothing fundamentally wrong with my current one, so I will stick with my ROM for the time being.

Thanks [RANT] You want to bash custom roms and the hard work and dedication of the chef's, and THEN you want someone to reccomend one for you?! If any other the other chef's have yet to say this to you...go F*@# yourself and keep piddling around with a clunky, memory hogging 6.1 stock rom. So sick of tards like you that don't feel like they have to put in the same amount of work to find the rom that you want. It takes researching all of the threads, a little bit of reading (you can read can't you?), and multple flashes to find the right rom for your needs. Don't come on here asking everyone to do the work for you while simultaniously bitching about the very work that you say you are interested in. Oh, and you say you want a "more finger friendly UI"? Well, what the hell do you think all this winmo 6.5 development is, you moron? Can you not look at a damn picture in a single solitary thread for a cooked 6.5 rom and discern that? You are an idiot and a lazy one at that. Edited September 22, 2009 by semmtexx

Guest arirang Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 a very important issue is the channel used to keep your phone/PDA ROM updated--a mandatory push [ala iPhone], or voluntary [ala custom ROMs]. bricking the phone is a risk for both. however, i prefer the latter method because the omnia is chameleon. do you want a battery-sipper? there's a ROM for that. want it stripped to the bone? there's a ROM for that. want eye-candy galore? bleeding-edge? you get the idea. the OEM ROM does not fully leverage what the omnia 19x0 can do/handle. the chefs do [paging pool, compression, etc.].
Guest Koofteh Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 (edited) - Unofficial ROMs seem like they are half way done - If you look at thread of QBus and Kuanchai you can see that like every 3 days there are new ROMs from SAME cooks. I only noticed this line when it was quoted, so I will reply to it now and point out a painfully obvious fact that I think c0dehunter might have missed. You want to know why the same cooks keep releasing new ROMs every few days? You might think it's because they have no life and like to sit at home and cook ROMs, just to confuse people who just flashed their old ROM to their phone. It's also not because they don't have time to release a proper, or 'all the way done' ROM. The reason you see so many new ROMs is because Microsoft is somewhat publicly developing Windows Mobile 6.5... as programmers work away at a program they often, usually nightly, turn the code they have into a workable application so it can be tested out. You are seeing these different builds appear as ROMs on here as we see Microsoft developing WM6.5.0 and then 6.5.1. Not sure how you could have missed this, but the reason the same exact cooks keep releasing seemingly identical ROMs is because Microsoft keep tinkering with their new OS. Guest Sb. Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 If you dont like the fact that theres a new rom out then dont use it, stick to your original rom or buy an iphone dude. Were ginuea pigs for the new software and we have the oportunity to use it,test it and help out by writing our feedback on what new issues have arisen or what issues have been solved. If this fact frightens you then dont do it. Stick to what works.
Guest Koofteh Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 (edited) I just remembered one big difference between the ROM I'm using now and what the phone had on it when I bought it last year. Screen rotation - it used to take 3-4 full seconds to rotate the screen. Now it's virtually instant using the zoom in out animation, probably much better if you disabled the animation somehow. I wish I had a video camera so I could show you the difference so I could show you the difference c0dehunter. Edited September 23, 2009 by Koofteh
