Guest SabersKunk Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 Why don't any of the ROMS for the Hero allow for BT file transfer? What's up with that? Hardware limitation?
Guest scopes64 Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 Its the Android OS. The BT stack does not support file transfer.

Guest Dr Hotdog Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 How bizzare! I wonder if it's in the next release? Nope, it's not going to be in the final 1.6 (Donut) release either. Maybe in 2.0 (Eclair) if we're lucky. A lot of people are surprised (and angry) about this. If you care about it please star the issue here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1725 Don't post comments just to say "Me too" though, it doesn't help and it gets emailed to everyone who has starred the issue. There no DUN or PAN tethering support in the Android Bluetooth stack either, see here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1416 Please star that too, if it's something you'd like to see. The only thing that Android phones can do with Bluetooth at present is connect to headsets and handsfree kits. The BlueX app for rooted phones adds some file transfer functionality, but doesn't currently work on the Hero. The Wireless Tether for Root Users app included in the MoDaCo Custom ROM has a Bluetooth tethering function but this wouldn't work for me.

But tethering can be achieved via USB or wifi as standard, or so I thought. I agree though, I use PAN on my Diamond to my eeepc everytime I use the train and this is a must have as far as I am concerned but I can live with USB or WIFI tether (despite horrendous battery drain on both devices) until Google implement PAN support. Edit: Apologies for the Highjackk but wont this work? : http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ Edited September 23, 2009 by hp1

Edit: Apologies for the Highjackk but wont this work? : http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ USB tethering works out of the box with the Hero, yes. Just turn in on/off under Settings > Wireless Settings > Share Mobile Internet Connections. It's fine as far as it goes, but of course you need to always have a suitable USB cable with you. WiFi tethering is not included as standard, but can be enable for rooted phones only with the app you linked to, Wireless Tether for Root Users. It's included in the MoDaCo Custom ROMs. Bluetooth tethering is a better solution than WiFi though as the power consumption is significantly less. There are also a number of products (car sat navs, etc.) than require either Bluetooth PAN or DUN connections to fetch updates, and people would like to have their Android phones provide the connection for them. Wireless Tether for Root Users has recently added a Bluetooth tethering function, but it wouldn't work for me. Anyone else used it?

I was very surprised to find out that android didn't support BT file transfer. I consider this to be basic functionality that is missing. *sigh* :)

Sorry for the bump but I took the plunge and rooted my phone tonight (thanks ClarkEEE!) and installed Wireless Tether for Root User on my Hero. I was disappointed to find that neither the Wifi or the BT tethering worked. My netbook could see the Wifi signal but just wouldn't connect and my BT manager didnt even recognise the Hero as having PAN capability. Will have to stick to the old fashioned USB cable till this is fixed. Anybody actually get this app to work?
