.... as soon as my 12 months are up i'll be sticking a generic build on mine.

why wait that long, my t-mobile g2 stayed unmodded for 45 mins...then on to MoDaCo Custom ROM.

I was the same...but yesterday, impatience got the better of me and I rooted my G2 touch, and put on MoDaCo 2.3...works a treat!! Wish I'd done it sooner!! I can't imagine how the t-mobile ROM would be any better than this one. Anyways, mine's rooted now so gives me more. :)

Might be a stupid question but, will the new tmobile Rom stop me rooting my hero in the future? Think i'll wait for the official release but it might be the last so want to make sure I can till root/flash ifthey forget about us.

So i took a semi-plunge and rooted my phone so that i could make a nandroid backup, with the intention on using the ModaCo Rom....i used the unlockr video guide.....i just have 2 questions...

The T-Mobile official rom is apparently out next week......so if i load the MoDaCo Rom can i still update to the T-Mobile rom with my rooted G2?

Or Is there a way to simply un-root the phone? is this done by just doing a restore of the nandroid backup?

Sorry if this has been discussed, bit of a android noob.....only had the phone a week and i'm already impatient with waiting for T-Mobile.....

Cheers!

Hi quatershade,

The answer is.. maybe.

Currently there is a flaw in the HBOOT on the hero that allows you to install a custom recovery img, and in turn load rooted roms. i think the latest Orange/HTC RUU already made an attempt to patch the problem, but there is already a way to defeat it. In future ROM updates, they might patch it completely.

For what it is worth, I would root now..as Paul and other ROM modders will always buld new roms using the latest official/un-official rom available.

Hi Loz,

Yes you will be able to update to the official T-mo rom, however you will lose ROOT and all of the extra functions that will give you.

Hi Paul,

I was wondering what your aims are with regards to testing the G2 Touch because surely it uses eactly the same rom as the HTC Hero with the exception of a few settings, ringtones and apps?

One small an easy question to answer, do you know the browser homepage provided with the T-Mobile G2 Touch? I found it useful but on loading your rom I am stuck with the htc hero website. I have searched a lot of forums but can seem to find someone who will offer me an answer.

Cheers

Here you are if you dont already have it. www.t-mobile-favourites.co.uk. :)

Hey, back to ask more noob questions....sorry in advance!

so i tried the MoDaCo custom Rom but it caused a few weird things to happen....firstly my emails didnt get pushed thru to my hero and in certain applications if i pressed the 'home' button the t-mobile screen would appear and it would freeze for 5-10 seconds..

so i decided to use my nandroid backup image and restore it back the old Rom, i then used mybackup pro to reinstall everything, and now everything is back to normal. So my question is, i know im on the old rom but is the phone still rooted? i still get the recovery screen on reboot and holding the home and power button, or are these 2 different things? is there a way to get back to Stock without the recovery screen?.... i guess im just worried now if anything goes wrong with my G2 that it will be easily spotted that i have changed the roms etc......... sorry if these are stupid questions etc....still getting used to it all.....

Loz

I'm tempted to go the MoDaCo route on my T-mobile G2 and the news that TM patches will remove the ability to Root my phone.

I've been applying custom ROMs to my previous HTC winmob phones for a couple of years now and have 10 years experience of Linux.

The only thing holding me back are the reports of differing problems with ROM 2.3.

Just use 2.2, it's amazing!

2.3 is still pretty good, but 2.2 just seems smoother...

(or alternatively, you could wait 1 more day and just upgrade to the official T-mobile ROM)

I've downloaded 2.2 and 2.3, not sure if I should get the radio too.

My Hero says:

OK I bit the bullet, opened a bottle of wine and flashed 2.2.

After a long, nail-biting reboot my Hero now says:

Strangely, all my settings have remained, I was expecting to get a 'Welcome to Android' screen.

Looking for other differences now.

I'm not sure if this is hijacking the ROM bit of the thread but I had a question about the G2. I've read that the latest update for the Hero really improved the speed, particularly on the home screen. Did the G2 suffer from this in the first place and if so how have TMobile been in general with pushing OS updates? I'm on the fence about getting a G2 (I'm due an upgrade from TMobile) or just buying a sim free Hero (or an iphone, but thats a different matter).

Any other differences between the G2 and Hero I should worry about (I probably won't change the ROM at first)

The Tmobile had an older slower rom than the MCC. Applying the MCC Roms improves performance. If you follow the guides you can apply the MCC roms to the G2 without any problems. The latest Tmobile G2 update which incorparates the latest HTC Rom is due out today.

Due out today??

Not according to T-Mobile, within 10 working days from last Monday, which if they are true to form will mean Friday at the latest.

The only thing holding me back are the reports of differing problems with ROM 2.3.

Same thing here... I have installed the new bootimage, made the backup, also used mybackup to make sure my contacts/mails/sms/etc can be restored and put both the 2.2 and 2.3 version on my sdcard.

...but... Reading through the posts, I don't think i will be doing the 2.3 upgrade.. I understand that the are both based on the same rom, so maybe try 2.2 first.. and wait for a more reassuring version in the near future..

Well I flashed the 2.2 for a couple of hours, worked fine.

Then I flashed 2.3 and that worked fine apart from one important aspect.....no data link except by WiFi.

On looking at the mobile network, the APN page is empty.

I suspect that this is the problem... I could reflash my original ROM from the Nandroid backup to get the settings, but does anyone have them to hand for T-Mobile?

Today I felt brave enough to install the 2.2 version. All went smoothly..

I tried to set up a2sd, but could not find anything in the apps list which even remotely linked to it. The market only had Apps2SD version 2 but this did not do the job.

Any info here how to set this up?

Just posted on the T-Mob forums:

RE: G2 / HTC Hero Updated ROM

Posted: 36 minutes ago in response to: edwaado

Hi everybody, Thanks for all of your comments in relation to the G2 update. I’m pleased to announce that the update has been signed off and I'd also like to share with you what we are doing to improve things for the future.

So when will we get it?

We have instructed HTC to complete the release and are hoping to receive it and have it available by close of business Friday 2nd October.

Why did it take us so long?

All builds for all Networks are put together by the handset manufacturer – in this case HTC. Your feedback helped us to increase the pressure on HTC and we received the firmware for test on Monday of last week. The testing process that we went through highlighted a known bug inherent to the Peep application that was also impacting other features on the phone, and was subsequently called out as a showstopper. This has now been resolved and re-tested with no recurrence of the issue and we are happy to sign-off the upgrade.

So what are we doing to improve things in the future?

The forums were created to allow customers to help each other and for us to gain feedback on how we support you. As a result of this issue I am meeting with the team in charge of our handset strategy to kick-off a full review of how we manage the expectations of you, our customers in relation to new T-Mobile software/firmware versions for the handsets that we range and with the manufacturers that we work with.

We are trying to support the interests of you, our customers, and when in cases such as this, we don’t meet your expectations, we are using your feedback to improve the way we support your needs. I hope that we can demonstrate that we have listened and improved our approach in the very near future. Thanks again for your feedback and patience, please keep it coming.

Regards, Chris

I'd like an opinion if I can get one, does anyone here have any contacts at Google to verify this statement just posted on T-Mob's site, sounds like soft shoe shuffle to me??

Hi everyone,

in learning the lessons from the last few days I have an update which whilst difficult to give will keep you in the picture.

T-Mobile has tested and approved the software from a network perspective and as the software is Android based it has to go through an approval process by google. We approved the software with HTC and it is now with google awaiting authorisation. Once HTC have received this, they will convert the firmware to a production file and send it accross to T-Mobile so that we can distribute it. HTC are not expecting sign-off in time for it to be released today.

We have raised this with our international team who manage the relationships with HTC and Google and they are doing all that they can to try and expedite the process.

We have only just received this information and I am sharing with you as a priority based on the poor communication previously. I will also be chasing for an update mid-afternoon (3pm ish) to see if the situation has changed and I will update again later.

In relation to the CS statement about 4pm, this unfortunately isn't the case as I have mentioned above and have informed the CS comms team to ensure that all agents are given the latest picture.

Once again sorry for the news, and I will report back again mid afternoon.

The rom's not coming out until Monday now (supposedly)

LOL!

The ROM isn't coming until Monday that is correct.

They are also blaming HTC and Google for it. They have made a laughing stock of all their customers :D

I got bored of them today and have just loaded MoDaCo 2.3 and I thank the lord I did. What a wonderful phone this now is :)

I've been following the fiasco with a close eye, and finally - I've joined Modaco :)

It's been over the 10 day watershed. Am going to see how this pans out till Monday since that's officially a "working day".

Thanks for the heads up on the forum thread. I do appreciate that T-Mobile, HTC and Google all have vested interests in maintaining a good Customer record - but frankly 3 separate head chefs is getting way OTT for any company to sign off anything. I've seen it in the past working for Office Mobs and heck - it'd be a hard stretch to be the guy RIGHT at the end of the faceless corporate chains of all 3 companies who finally ticks the relevant box that says "This is A-OK to roll out now!" without any idea on whether or not the rom is a complete, no holds barred, stable success.

In the meantime, whilst I appreciate that a "n00b" T-Mobile G2 guide may not be a necessity - it would certainly be a good thing to post a sticky, explaining the entire situation from start to finish, all the lingo involved in HTC rooting/upgrading/unlocking, the good points and bad points, and the complete step-by-step guide to getting a "perfect" custom rom running on a G2 with and without limits.

Just a one step stickied thread at the top of the forum for us T-Mobilers pretty please? :D

Edit: Damnit - I should've listed myself as an unlucky owner of a T-Mobile G2 Touch and not a HTC Hero...how do I edit that?
