Rom and Radio upgrades...

Hi there,

Before I ask my question, I can imagine the response being "if you dont know what it is, you shouldn't be doing it!!". That said, I thought I would ask what the 'Radio' download is? I'm assuming that it's not an FM radio, so I wondered what it would be.

I've already rooted my phone and updated the Rom, but this baffled me.

I'm not an expert but from what I understood, RADIO is the part of the firmware/os/driver that deals with the wireless stuff.

The Radio code runs the mobile network, the wifi and bluetooth. It's the lowest code that manages that stuff. A newer radio could let us imagine they improved something like slight better reception or handling of the distance from the cell towers (and battery use).

Thanks! I was wondering the same...

Further, I would like to know how to install a Radio Update?

I recently upgraded my HTC Hero with the latest update from MoDaCo. So would I need this radio update? if so, would it require me to reinstall the entire firmware?

kindly advice.

Thanks

Nope, just rename the radio file to "update.zip" and install in the same way you installed the firmware.

Quick question, for doing the radio part, is it the same procedure??

backup, wipe etc...

I done the ROM no probs, done the radio too. Had some little issues, so i did a wipe. then i cant get any connection to internet??

So i restored original backup...

everything back to normal.

I also, havent partioned my SDcard at all. So, coming from WinMo, it is obviously different, but it seems simpler (and quicker).

I will partition the SDcard later, and try again, but is it essential to backup & wipe for the radio?

Answer would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, no don't wipe.

You can install the radio before or after you flash the main rom. If you've already got a backup of your original there is no need to back up again. There are plenty of older radio's available for download on here so if you find the new one worse you can always go back one. Personally I found the new one better.

Try to stick to at least the radio that came with the corresponding official update.

Example:

I got my Hero with 1.xx with Radio that ends with 04.xx

Had the impression bluetooth sync with handsfree was working better with 1.xx than 2.xx so kept 2.xx but downgraded the radio to the one that came with 1.xx

To my surprise, everything worked (although understood the bluetooth thing was only my impression)... Except sending SMS. For some strange reason I couldn't send SMS anymore. Upgraded back to the radio that came with 2.XX and everything good as before.

Currently running Modaco 2.2 Enhanced (great ROM!) with the radio that came with official update. There is a newer radio (FU instead of EU) but seems my battery doesn't like it, same for some people who have some lags on HSDPA.

I hate to reopen questions or "repost" questions that have already been added. But I need a bit of clarification.

Clearly after flipping over pages and pages I came to understand that radio files really are to upgrade the "connectivity/frequency" part of the system. But my questions is (sorry if it sounds stupid) does the naming is something I should care about?. I notice some have EU, others U, other JU and well for a minute I was sure this was to identify a certain continent or location of use.

Sorry if my question is stupid, just want to be clear on it.

it is not location based, it is more a versioning system. EU < FU < IU < JU. so far it seems best to use the latest, i am running JU (which turned itself into JH on my hero...) in germany, works very good. also tested gps yesterday, got a fix indoors in like 2-3 minutes.

Thank you, ;) I just needed some else to confirm this.
