Difference between branches

Hi guys, cookers and fans. Can someone explain about the differences between the several branches, used as base for the cooked Roms? Where do they come from? Is Samsung the source of this branches?

And what about the new Contacts Application? Is there any branch releasing this application, yet? Is there any Rom, cooked with this application?

XDA has a good summary of the different branches, but the main 2 are Com3 and Com4. Com3 normally has new backend WM6.5 elements, and Com4 normally has new UI elements.
