Anyway to lock on to evdo while tethered?

I have an i910 currently running Bgill55 CF03 Roms 6.5.1 build 23060 "Neo 2.0 Alpha" v3.1. I usually tether my laptop at work which has a poor signal for evdo and a much stronger 1x signal. Sometimes it will stay on the EV network and Others it switches over to 1x which is dramatically slower than EV.

I am trying to figure out if there is a way to make the phone the stay on the evdo network while I have a data connection active or to just disable 1x b4 I tether so it won't switch over.

Or if anyone has had any success using an external antenna with the omnia. If so what kind and where did you get it.

as far as I know that's impossible. I've also heard pretty good things about external antennas awhile back, but I think they're expensive.
