What does pagepool size actually mean?

I've seen a lot of custom roms that mention pagepool as part of their build. These usually range from 12meg pagepool to 16meg pagepool. What is pagepool? What are the advantages/disadvantages to have a smaller or larger pagepool size?

It's the amount of room you give your origami fish to swim around in :)

But no, really, it's the amount of shared space for programs to SHARE, not use just themselves.

Programs are loaded into the program memory, and then use the page pool..
