Tips on Improving the speed of your Hero

Hi all,

I thought it would be good to have a topic where we can share ideas on improving the speed of the hero. For me, despite the great improvements made by Paul's ROMs, i still find it a bit annoying when i am typing a text message and every so often the phone cannot keep up with my fingers. To try to limit this, I use taskiller to keep any apps that i am using from using up memory.

I have read about reducing the number of widgets, and using faster SD cards, but am unsure if this will fix my text message problem. Using the taskiller app, it says I have 63m of available memory. What do you have free, and what do you do to maximise this?

Does the amount of apps you have installed (not in use, just installed) affect the speed?

So please share any tips you have on improving the speed of the phone. Anybody noticed a big improvement after changing SD card?

ello there,

I Also use taskkiller to reduce running apps , My wife and i both have HTC Orange branded Heros running Pauls 2.7.1 Roms.

The way you have widgets must have an effect as both our handsets side by side my wifes has more available memory than mine my after taskkiller is 71ish my wifes is 109! . I reduced the amout of installed apps and the ammount of stuff i had added to home and this has improved, im using HC 8gb memory card thats not the best with a 64mb swap using swapper app

I've got a Hero running 2.5.1 with all 7 screens full of apps/widgets and I don't have any speed issues.

Occasionally I'll see some slow down when scrolling through screens and the applications menu, but that seems to sort itself out after a few seconds.

I used to use Advanced Task Manager daily before rooting, but now there's no need!

109! That makes me think something is wrong! Please tell me about swapper... what exactly does it do, and is it simply a case of installing it from market? Or do you have to set up your card?

What are other peoples available memory? Mine is on 50 now with minimum running

Swapper requires root, its part of the latest custom rom, you can have it set up a swap file on your fat32 partition, best way is to format your sd card to have FAT32/EXT3 for apps/linux-swap, so everyone says - thats the way i set it up anyways. This explains what it does:

Ok thanks for explaining that. I have 2.7 at the moment, so do I need to install it? I have no experience doing anything pike that to sd cards, is it easy or should I avoid it?

Just re booted and memory shot up to 88!

if you set up your memory card right with the aps2sd system built into Pauls roms you should be fine. i have loads and loads of apps and my phone internal memory is at 150mb and i have no speed issues.

I have rooted and installed Paula 2.7 Rom, does this automatically sort out the sd card? Or do I have to do something myself?

Thanks for your reply

what recovery image do you have, if youve got Amon_RA's itll format the sd card for you theres an option, or you could do it manually using adb back up the files on the sd and copy back once reformatted.

I used this guide to do it manually before i got the Amon_RA recovery

http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-t...ndroid-apps2sd/

as mentioned above if you partition your sd card and then point the swapper app to the swap partition on the sd card thats it. once there is an ext3 partition on the sd card apps2sd will automatically save your installed apps to the sd card.

To partition your SD card, see my guide, which is basically the same as the one @ androidandme.....but i think easier to follow.

Thanks for your help guys. I am goign to try to partition my memory card for swap space tomorrow. When you have done this, has it made the phone faster??

Also, any tips on where to buy a good sd card from. I want 8 or 16gb, but dont know how to tell if its a good one or bad as i have read that simply looking at the class is not enough.

Can somebody please tell me if "settings" should be runnig all the time. I'm sure it didnt used to, but now settings is always a running application according to my taskiller. If i kill it, it is runnign again with 5 mins.

Also please could somebody tell me the default settings in setting-locale & text- touch input-text input. Which of the top four options should be ticked? I fiddled with this recently and cannot remember what it should be, please help!

Thanks, Dave.

Also, any advice on where and what sd card to buy would be great as im looking to do this but dont know how to choose :)

I'm confused now!

I upgraded to the latest MoDaCo rom a few weeks ago and today decided I'd format my SD card. I copied everything to the PC and invoked the fat32+ext2+swap option from the recovery menu, then I rebooted and then back into the recovery menu and did the convert ext2 to ext3 routine.

All seemed to go OK.

When I now look at the SD in Linda I don't see any partitions, just "SD Card" which contains a single folder called Rosie_Scroll. Is this right?

And where is the swapper app that has been referred to? I can see nothing on the apps menu... ahh, hold on....just seen it...... is this the entry on the recovery menu "move apps+dalvik-cache to SD"?

I think I'm guna install the amon ra recovery image and partition it using that. I foudn this video on youtube where the guy uses a G1... am i ok to follow the steps exactly for my Hero??

Also, is there any real dif of using Cyanagon to Amon ra? Will all the modaco stuff still work fine with it?

Someone mentioned removing the custom locale info, does this improve speed or free up much memory? How would I remove it?
