Orange Hero

I want to get a Hero and I don't plan to root it or change the rom or anything and I can't deceide between Orange, Vodafone or T-Mobile (who I am currently with and can get a discount tarrif with).

Can anyone tell me if Orange rebrand the software at all? If so does that mean a long wait for an update like the G2 on t-mobile or cna you just use the updates from HTC with an Orange one.

I have an Orange Hero. I cannot find ANY branding in the software other than the default bookmarks are for Orange World. There is an Orange splash screen when you switch it on and an Orange logo on thee back cover. Thats it. HTC are releasing carrier specific updates, which I used when I got mine and it doesn't add any new Orange stuff. I think it just adds all the Orange APN settings etc.

I have rooted mine but stuck with the Orange specific ROMs from HTC. I know Pauls Modaco ROM is supposed too be better/faster etc but I cant find a whole lot wrong with the Orange one that would make me want to change.

Hope that helps.

It really does, thanks! Did you have to wait long for the update?

It had already been released by the time I got my Hero. As I understand it, HTC release a new generic ROM then the carrier specific ones get released a little bit afterwards. The TMob one took a lot longer to release than the orange one tho this may not be the case wit the next update. I think Paul bases all his Modaco ROMs on the same update though heavily tweaked. (happy to be corrected here).

I think the next big update will actually be to Android itself. I'm not actually clear as to how 'Donut' will rolled out to all devices?

I'm with Orange too and have a Modaco ROM.

I believe some people had issues with Vodafone Heroes working with Twitter but I think it's sorted now, might be worth checking that. Personally, I'd go for the best deal as aside from what you're paying and what you get, I'm not sure there's any difference. I know that Orange and T-Mobile have had firmware updates released, if it's important, the Orange one came out significantly quicker than the T-mobile one but I've heard that previously they've been slow to release firmwares.

Sadly, I avoided T-Mobile's phone because I wanted a phone that said HTC, not T-mobile above the screen but I believe they offer the best data package.
