Hi

FOR OMNIA i900

The data cable bundled with the omnia will not charge from a dumb usb charger like a AC wall socket USB charger or a car charger etc

I ask because I need to go camping and want to take a solar USB charger with me but this probably wont charge from it , what sort of cable do i need ?

will this work ??

i doubt it. as far as i know, the only things that can charge the phone through usb cable are ones that can recognize it as a mass storage device. i tried using a car lighter to usb that my friend uses to charge his iphone and it didnt work for me, yet my radio that has a usb input charges it perfectly when i have it hooked up as mass storage device.

just use a car charger. mine works great and is very fast to charge. Charging an omnia through the USB is very slow at the best of times. a dedicated charger will work much better

Well here is what I did:

I took a Mezzi laptop briefcase and fashioned a cigarette lighter socket into it, along with a extension cord socket which allows me to plug it directly into a light weight tractor battery.

Cheap solar panel I bought of Ebay mounted to the side of the case, sorry about picture quality.

A look at the minor wiring inside. Was a fairly simple build and not too expensive, turned out to be quite the conversation piece lol. I use this briefcase every single day for my laptop and I assure you it gets well abused. With only partial sunlight it has no issues charging my phone, can charge phone/laptop/ext. battery with full sun. Also in full sun with the battery hooked up I'll run my laptop off it all day.

This is explained in more detail on another thread but to paraphrase, the data cable supplied only works when connected to a laptop. It applies the 5v's to a certain pin in the plug (say pin 10 for now) and the phone is set to only except a voltage from this pin if the data pins are active (say pins 5 & 6). Plugging this cable in to a generic USB charger will not work.

The mains / wall charges and Samsung car chargers you can buy apply the 5v's to a different pin (say pin 9) and the phone will accept a charge from this pin without the data pins being active. Don't ask me why Samsung did this but they did.

The easiest way around this that I've found is to use one of these "http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/samsung-i900-audio-and-charger-adapter-p20870.htm?referer=AFF_MOBILES-PROD-P-20870". If you use this and any generic usb to mini-usb cable it is wired to apply the 5v's to the same pin as the mains and car chagers Samsung provide. That means it will charge without the data pins being active, from any 5v usb supply.

I've used this setup with dozens of differnet generic chargers over the last year and they've all worked fine.
