Losing mobile signal

On my commute into work, I sometimes lose signal on my HTC Magic (on Voda). I get the little 'x' in the signal bar, which is normal. But occasionally, I never get signal back - even when I go through places that I know signals is available (e.g., London Waterloo). It can persist like this for quite a while; it can always be fixed by switching to Airplane mode and back again, at which point the signal springs into life.

Problem happened with 1.5, and persists since the Donut OTA update last week. It's like the auto-poll for an available signal isn't so robust or even stops polling altogether.

Anyone else experienced this, either on their Magic or other devices?
