Anyone care to place bets on whether HTC can manage to release a v1.6 firmware for the Hero before v2.0 is available to download to anyone with a generic Android phone ?

I think HTC will release 1.6 for the G1 and maybe the Magic, but will hold out for 2.0 for the Hero IMHO

I say this because I believe that HTC are still experimenting with the limits the G1 can be pushed too

whereas the HERO being a later phone should be more likely to work with 2.0.

Considering that the DROID will be released at the end of this week with 2.0 I can only assume HTC have been working in the background on implementing this on their current phones and future ones.

Holding my breath even more now as I was content originally to wait for 1.6, BUT OW, nothing but 2.0 will do

(Obviously will wait hopefully for MCR 3.0 (2.9) or whatever ROM Paul decides to call it) :D

In a word: No.

AIUI The hero isn't quite a standard Android phone so there needs to be some custom work to get 1.6 working on it.

The official word from HTC is thay've started on a version of 1.6 for the Hero but they haven't released any information on when they expect it might be available.

-- Edit -- According to the thread here (http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/294942/no-1-6-from-htc-for-hero/) HTC have just announced that 1.6 will NOT be available for the Hero but instead they'll be going direct to 2.0 - I'll await official confirmation on this but I can't say I'll be surprised if it is true.

There are also independent groups working on trying to create a version of 1.6 that supports the Hero but without access to things like drivers for the Hero's hardware that's a difficult task.

The Motorola Droid is supposed to be the first phone to use Android v2.0 and that's due out next month (though more details on the Droid should be out later today to confirm if it will actually be shipping with 2.0).
