Guest T39andcounting Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 OK, so first, please don't tell me to google/search. I've been going round in circles for the last few hours. Nothing seems to work for me. I received a Hero from Orange yesterday as an upgrade and am trying to Root it so I can use WiFi tethering, and use custom ROMs, but none of the options seem to work. I've tried the instructions to install the patched recovery image but that says "downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)" I've tried the guide on theUnlockr.com (root your hero in one click). This fails, so the instructions say I need to unroot. I try this and it says 'wrong customer ID. The only option that is allowed by my phone is to go back to the original ROM, and so back to the beginning again. Am I missing something really obvious? Is rooting even possible with the latest Orange Hero? Please help!
Guest kendon Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 your rom version could help, also have you checked the goldcard thread?
Guest hp1 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 There is also a thread on here that ClarkEEE posted with step by step instructions that allowed me to root my Hero while retaining the updated Orange ROM. Oh yeah I have not managed to get wireless tether for root users to work yet on my Hero, if you manage it, let me know!
Guest T39andcounting Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 your rom version could help Sorry, should have included that... Firmware: 1.5 Baseband version: 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18 Kernel Version: 2.6.27-8dd6dee Build number: 2.73.61.5 145733 CL#61267 Software version 1.0.0.A6288 also have you checked the goldcard thread? I haven't, but I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip.
Guest clarkEEE1 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 I think the guide I did for hp1 is in the amon recovery thread if I remember correctly the old school adb way but like kendon said looks like you need to do the gold card method.I think there's a easyier way now on xda if I come across it again ill post the link.

Thanks for the tip. while you're at it, be so kind and make a nandroid backup and give it to paul, as there is no version of this rom for download in the update thread. might help with rooting too...
Guest markspark100 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Try this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613 :D
Guest GodsDevil Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Try this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613 :D This method is the same as theunlockr.come method. What you need id the GOLDCARD system explained on this link. :P D
Guest markspark100 Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Are you sure you need to do that because I updated from the original orange ROM to the latest Orange ROM but then Still managed to Root using the method i posted a link to and the version your ROM is was the same as mine I checked on my downloaded RUU. I'm pretty sure that the goldcard method was made for the tmobile version where they'd fixed a bug allowing this method. When does it fail using the one click rooting method?
Guest GodsDevil Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Its not just T-mobile, a lot of Asian Heroes (and by the looks of it the new models from Orange) can't be unlocked using flashrec as HTC has patched the exploit being used. I am not sure what Kernel and Builds are blocking it but I am sure it is mentioned somewhere on XDA forums. In such cases Goldcard is the only method I know of. I would suggest trying both these methods again before you go for Goldcard method as it is a bit complex. Also, there has been a mention about another easier method earlier in this post if you can find that. :D D
Guest markspark100 Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 well i can always upload the RUU I installed on my phone somewhere if you know where i can upload a 100 mb file as i said it definately worked on that one if they've changed it since i downloaded it. then you could install that one as it would work being orange then you should be able o use the one click method.
Guest shenshang Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 i had the EXACT problem as you, but i found this guide on theunlockr.com "http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/18/how-to-downgrade-your-htc-hero-so-it-can-be-rooted/", it comes with video instructions and everything, its the goldcard method. It worked like a treat, after that I could root the hero.
Guest GodsDevil Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Didn't know they made a video for that too. :D But this should work no matter what version you have loaded. After you downgrade use flashrec to root with Amon RA's 1.2.3 recovery image from XDA. It has more options. It also has an option for automatically parting the sd-card which saves you a lot of trouble. D
Guest T39andcounting Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Try this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613 Thanks for the tip... this did actually work! :D I compared this to theunlockr.com instructions at http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-ro...o-in-one-click/ and they differ slightly in the files they use... The xda-developers thread links to an older version of flashrec. It also uses the Cyanogen's/Modaco recovery image where theunlockr.com uses Amon Ra’s Hero Recovery Image. Not sure which of those made the difference, (or if I was just doing something wrong originally). Anyway, I'm now on the rooted Modaco 2.8 custom ROM, and didn't even have to do a wipe to install it! I did do a Nandroid backup first, so will see if Paul wants it. Thanks for all your help and suggestions!
Guest markspark100 Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 glad you managed to sort it :D
