Rooting T-Mobile G2 & Installing HTC Software

Hi all,

Thinking about getting a G2 quite soon, but a few questions I hope someone has the time to take a look at.

I have been reading through the forum for the past week finding out about the T-Mobile G2 and installing the HTC Hero Rom (or Paul's custom ROM) onto it.

From what I have gathered, the T-Mobile G2 is currently shipping without the latest update that requires us to do the GoldCard update from xda.

If this is the case, can I use fastboot to boot the cm-hero-recovery.img file and then Nandroid backup from there?

Then, can I follow these instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...mp;postcount=38 to root the stock T-Mobile ROM?

After that, this is where I get lost.

a) do I actually need to root the phone to install another ROM (I think I do)

:D how do I go about installing another ROM eg. Paul's or stock Hero? (Probably Paul's is better)

Couple of quick other questions.

1) What does RUU mean? I think I have worked out it is an update that is run in EXE form from your PC, and it updates your phone through USB. Is this correct?

2) Are there any major risks to switching ROM to the Hero one. I am new to android, but have experience in Linux and Windows and can understand what all the commands are doing, just not which ones are needed for which version of the hboot and rom.

Thanks to anyone who reads this and can help.
