Totally New to Flashing and ROMS

OK, I'm totally new to this whole flashing process. I have the Omnia i910, and I've been reading over a lot of the stickies.

But before I even jump into it, I was just curious as to how great the chances are of bricking my phone. Obviously I'm new and the chances for me are going to be a lot higher, but I mean, if I carefully follow the steps laid out, can it still get bricked from flashing it.

If it's an extremely delicate process and the chances are high, and should only be done by someone who knows what they're doing, then of course I'm going to reconsider.

Also, if I do flash my phone and attempt to install a new cooked ROM, does that void the manufacturer's warranty. In fact, I just upgraded my plan like 2 days ago from a Blackberry Storm (they didn't have the HTC TouchPro2 in store, and the Omnia only cost $50), so I have a 30 day return policy still in effect until the end of Nov.

i'm not going to tell that flashing is safe or flashing is dangerous, because its not really either.

i will tell you though that i have flashed my phone well over 50 times and have never bricked my phone. in the beginning i was just like you are now, i waited 2 months before i flashed a rom because i was afraid of bricking it. just make sure you do exactly as the instructions say and i would recommend using xp as vista runs higher risks of bricking.

I disagree with your Vista warning. I've flashed my phone at least 50 times, and now over 10 times with Windows 7. Best advice I can give you is read as much as you can. here is a good place to start. It's a sticky at the top of this forum. It really not that hard to flash, takes 5 mins at most. It is totally worth the risk for such a great interface these guys build.

Here is the best advice I can give after idiotically bricking my first Omnia:

1) Read the guide ( :D )

2) USE A USB 2.0 SLOT

The idoctor guide is very good, but this point is not emphasized as much as it should be IMO. XP and Vista will both work. . .I probably wouldn't use Windows 7 at this point - I think people like you (NOOB) and me (NOOB) should go with whatever is most well-documented.

Cheers and good luck!

well I am also a (NOOB) and i have flashed my htc and now m omnia all on win7 and win vista with success a couple scary moments but no bricks yet knock on wood. Once you do it its no problem and bam you have a new phone. but I must warn you it is addictive I await new builds hoping for better and it dose get better but sooner or latter i am just going to have to be satisfied.

yea, right now i've just been reading up on it as much as i can. i installed spb mobile shell 3 on my phone and just a simple thing like that got me hooked. i wanted to experiment and maybe get rid of winmo 6.1.

gotta get my computer fixed first though, my pc usually has a usb 2.0, but for some reason, as of late, i keep getting this error message when i plug in a usb stick saying "data transfers would be faster if i utilized a usb 2.0 port" or something like that, than it gives a list. it seems to do that on every usb slot i have. only started happening after windows xp service pack 3 update.
