Can't get contacts & calendar to sync - have tried the usual data deletions...

I am using a brand new HTC Hero (with chin) running Android 1.5.

* I have searched extansively for this issue and have tried as many fixes as I can find, please read on:

The phone connects with Google Mail & downloads & sends new emails, but will not sync contacts or calendar. I have tried clearing the 'gmail storage', 'google mail', 'google data' & 'contact storage' & have rebooted, but still cannot get it to sync. Background Data & Auto-Sync are on.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
